Overview
What compact laminate is
Compact laminate is made from layers of kraft paper impregnated with thermosetting resin, consolidated under heat and pressure into a single rigid board. A decorative paper and an overlay sit on one or both faces, and the body beneath them is laminate all the way through, typically dark brown or black unless a coloured core has been specified. There is no separate particleboard or fibreboard beneath the decorative surface.
The library already carries high-pressure-laminate-cladding, and the two are easy to confuse because both are pressed laminate panels. That entry covers weather-graded exterior facade panel, made to hang on a rainscreen support system with defined fixings and cavity behind. This entry is the interior worktop-grade board: slimmer, fixed down onto cabinetry, and detailed so that the machined edge is seen rather than hidden behind a fixing profile.
Because the board is homogeneous, edges are machined and polished rather than wrapped with a strip, and every sink or hob opening reveals the same core that shows at the perimeter. That makes the core colour a visible design decision. It also means support positions, panel spans and the placement of openings are fabrication and engineering decisions taken with the fabricator, not properties that can be read off a decor sample.

- Moisture behaviour
- There is no board core to swell, but junctions, fixings and the cabinetry beneath still respond to water. Ask how water reaching the underside of a sink opening will be drained or contained rather than assuming the panel alone solves it.
- Surface wear
- Marking, dulling and abrasion behaviour differ between decors and between matt and gloss finishes in the same range. Treat these as things to confirm from the specific product's documentation rather than as a fixed property of compact laminate.
- Appearance
- The core shows at every machined edge, arris and opening, so the core colour and the face decor are chosen as a pair. A pale decor over a dark core gives a deliberate outline that some schemes want and others do not.
- Installation dependency
- Machining is normally done off site with dedicated tooling after a template survey, so the survey rather than the order is the moment decisions are locked. Late changes on site are difficult and often mean a new panel.
- Repairability
- Damage to the decorative face cannot be sanded back the way a homogeneous mineral surface can, because the pattern is a thin printed layer. Ask the fabricator what a realistic repair looks like before assuming one exists.
- Documentation
- Cleaning products, permitted uses and warranty conditions are set out by the manufacturer for the exact decor and grade supplied. Retailer summaries are not a substitute for the technical sheet that accompanies the delivered product.

Exposure and environmental conditions
- Will the panel sit in a room with heavy steam and swinging humidity, such as a busy kitchen or a shared washroom?
- Is any edge or opening going to be wetted repeatedly, and how will water be stopped from standing there?
- Will strong daylight fall on the surface for long periods, and has colour stability been checked in the manufacturer's documentation?
- Are hot appliances going to sit on or beside the surface, and what does the product documentation say about that?
- Is the room unheated for part of the year, which changes how the panel and the cabinetry beneath it move together?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The carcase layout below sets the support pattern, so cabinetry and worktop have to be agreed as one arrangement.
- Fixings should allow the panel to move relative to the units rather than pinning it rigidly along its whole length.
- Openings for sinks and hobs weaken the panel locally, so their position relative to supports is set by the fabricator.
- Wall tolerance decides whether the panel is scribed, given a shadow gap or finished against a separate upstand.
- Any packing or subframe used to bring the top level becomes part of the assembly and should be recorded.
