A worktop is judged by how it behaves after a few years of use rather than by how it looks on the day it is fitted. Heat, water at joints and cut-outs, cleaning products and the support beneath it all decide that, and they vary far more by product and fabrication than by material family.

These entries describe what each surface is and the questions worth asking about it. They state no heat, scratch, stain or chemical resistance as absolute, make no food-contact or hygiene claim, and give no service life or maintenance interval. Support, spans and cut-outs are fabrication and engineering matters.

Laminate Worktop →Decorative laminate bonded over a particleboard or fibreboard core, with the laminate heated and rolled around the front edge so that face and edge run as one continuous surface.

Cultured Marble →A moulded vanity top of filled polyester resin faced with a thin gelcoat and cast with an integral bowl, so the visible surface is a coating rather than the body.

Polyethylene Board →A soft thermoplastic sheet used as a replaceable working board on preparation and workshop benches, intended to be cut into and eventually swapped out.

Soft Metal Surfacing →Thin soft non-ferrous sheet such as zinc, copper, pewter, brass or bronze, wrapped and soldered over a joinery core to form an interior counter face that dents, marks and darkens with use.

Paper Composite →A solid panel of cellulose paper saturated in thermosetting resin and pressed through its full thickness, so it is machined, sanded and oiled rather than faced.

Enamelled Lava Stone →Quarried volcanic stone slab coated in a ceramic glaze and kiln fired, so the working face is vitrified enamel with its characteristic fine crazing rather than bare rock.

Single Slab Timber Top →One full-width board of continuous grain used as a worktop, often keeping its waney edge, and moving as a single piece in a way a glued-up stave top does not.

Polypropylene Benchtop →A rigid thermoplastic bench surface fabricated by welding sheet into one piece, with upstands, channels and sinks formed in the same polymer rather than cut from board stock.

Worktop Joint Fittings →Connector bolts, clamps, brackets and cantilever plates that pull worktop joints closed and carry unsupported areas; a component chosen after the surface material, not a surface itself.
