A worktop is judged by how it behaves after a few years of use rather than by how it looks on the day it is fitted. Heat, water at joints and cut-outs, cleaning products and the support beneath it all decide that, and they vary far more by product and fabrication than by material family.

These entries describe what each surface is and the questions worth asking about it. They state no heat, scratch, stain or chemical resistance as absolute, make no food-contact or hygiene claim, and give no service life or maintenance interval. Support, spans and cut-outs are fabrication and engineering matters.
