Cultured Marble Cast Polymer Vanity Top

Explains why a cast polymer vanity top with a gelcoat face cannot be repaired like a homogeneous solid surface, and what that means for how damage should be planned for.

What cultured marble is

A cultured marble top is cast in a mould from a polyester resin heavily loaded with mineral filler, often ground marble or another carbonate, which gives the body its weight and its veined appearance. The mould is sprayed first with a gelcoat, a thin pigmented resin layer, and the filled body is then poured behind it. Bowl, deck, splashback returns and tap holes are all formed in the same casting.

This is the point that separates it from mineral-filled-solid-surface, which the library covers separately. Solid surface is homogeneous: the same material runs through the full depth, so a scratch or a dull patch can be abraded and polished back into the surrounding surface. Here the colour, the gloss and the veining live in the gelcoat only. Once wear or a deep scratch passes through that layer, the filled body beneath is exposed and cannot be polished back to match.

The other thing that defines the format is that it is a single moulded piece. There is no joint between bowl and deck, no sealed sink rim and usually no separate splashback, which is why it is a bathroom and washroom format. It also means the top is bought as a finished unit sized to a cabinet rather than fabricated to a survey, so cabinet and top are chosen together. Filler or aggregate held in a binder is also how agglomerated-marble-surface, recycled-glass-composite-surface and cast-epoxy-resin-worktop are made, each entry setting out its own filler, binder and route to repair.

Repairability
The gelcoat is a thin facing layer and carries all the colour and gloss. Light surface marks may be polished within it, but anything that reaches the filled body beneath exposes a different material that will not blend back.
Surface wear
Dulling around the bowl and the tap is the usual pattern, caused as much by cleaning as by use. Abrasive pads and scouring creams remove gloss quickly, which is why the cleaning regime matters more than it might seem.
Moisture behaviour
The moulded body and the integral bowl remove the sealed joint that a separate basin brings. Water management then depends on the junction with the wall and the cabinet, rather than on the top itself.
Appearance
The veining is a manufacturing effect created as the filled resin is poured, so it reads differently from natural stone and repeats in ways stone does not. Gloss level is set by the mould and cannot be changed afterwards.
Installation dependency
The top is bought sized to a cabinet rather than templated, so the cabinet and the top are chosen together. Site adjustment is limited, and cutting into a moulded top is not a routine operation.
Maintenance
Upkeep is mostly about which products are used, because the gelcoat responds badly to abrasives and to some bathroom cleaners. The manufacturer's list of excluded products is the document that matters here.
