Single Slab and Waney Edge Timber Worktop

Overview
What single slab timber top is
A single slab worktop is one board taken through the full width of the surface. It is cut from a large log, usually through and through, and it often keeps the waney edge where the bark once was, so the outline of the tree survives in the finished top. Everything about it, from grain and figure to knots and colour, runs unbroken from one end of the run to the other.
The comparison that matters is with butcher block. A stave-laminated top is deliberately built from many narrow strips glued side by side, often with the grain alternated, precisely so that the movement of each strip is small and works against its neighbour. A single slab has no such internal cancellation. It expands, shrinks and cups across its whole width as one piece, following the humidity of the room it lives in.
That drives the whole specification. Fixings are slotted or oversized so the board can move over the cabinets; gaps are left where the slab meets walls and returns; the drying history of the board, air dried and then conditioned, is a legitimate question to put to the supplier; and the finish is applied to every face including the underside, so that the two sides take up moisture at similar rates.

- Moisture behaviour
- Timber takes up and gives off moisture with the air around it, and a wide continuous board does so as one piece. The result shows as cupping, shrinkage gaps and movement at the fixings, and it is why the room's humidity and the board's own drying history both matter.
- Appearance
- Knots, shakes, fissures, sapwood and colour change are all part of what the board is, and some are stabilised with fillers by the supplier. Each slab is an individual object, chosen by looking at the actual board rather than by ordering from a range.
- Surface wear
- The face takes cuts, dents and marks from ordinary kitchen life, and the softer the species the more readily it shows them. Marks in the working areas will never match the quieter parts of the same board.
- Repairability
- Timber is among the more forgiving surfaces to make good, since a mark can often be sanded locally and the finish rebuilt over it. A split running with the grain is a different matter and needs the joiner's judgement.
- Maintenance
- The finish, whether an oil, a hardwax or a varnish, is what stands between the board and everyday water, and it is renewed when the surface stops behaving as it did. What to use is set by whatever was applied in the first place.
- Installation dependency
- Fixing is the crux. The board must be held down while remaining free to move across its width, which means slotted plates or oversized holes and a fitter who understands why they are there.
- Substrate dependency
- The cabinets beneath must give level, continuous support without pinning the board at every point. How the joiner reconciles those two requirements is worth asking about before fitting day.

- Is the house heated consistently, or does it stand cold and empty for long periods?
