Overview
What expanded cork board is
Expanded cork board is made by loading granulated cork bark into a mould and driving superheated steam through it. The heat expands the granules and mobilises the cork's own resin, which binds the mass together as it cools. The block is then cut into boards. The distinguishing fact is that nothing is added to hold it together: the binder is the material itself, which is why the board is a single substance rather than a granule-and-glue composite.
The board that results is rigid but not brittle, dark brown to near black, warm to the touch and noticeably light. It can be sawn and rasped, it takes a mechanical fixing, and it can be bonded. It is open to water vapour and tolerant of being wetted and drying again, which is the property that puts it in a different group from the flexible natural-fibre quilts — sheep wool, hemp and blown paper fibre — that otherwise make up the bio-based part of an insulation range.
That combination, rigid and vapour-open and bio-based at the same time, is what it is chosen for. It is met externally as the insulation layer beneath a rendered external insulation build-up or behind a ventilated cladding, and internally on solid walls where a professional has designed a vapour-open lining. It is a different product from the cork tiles, planks and rolls sold as a floor covering or a wall finish, which are made and used for the look and feel of a surface rather than as an insulation layer.

- Installation dependency
- Boards are sawn, fixed mechanically or bonded, and commonly both. Joint tightness, the pattern of fixings and how the board is taken round reveals and junctions are the installation subjects.
- Appearance
- The board is dark and granular in the hand and is almost always covered by a render, lining or cladding, so what is seen in service is the finish. Where a cut edge remains visible at a reveal, it is a detail worth drawing.
- Repairability
- A damaged board is cut out and replaced rather than filled. Where it has been rendered over, reaching a board means removing the finish, which is the practical repair question for any rendered insulation layer.
- Fire-related questions
- No fire characteristic is claimed or compared here. Fire behaviour belongs to the complete external wall or roof build-up, differs by building type, height and location, and is a matter for the manufacturer's documentation, a qualified professional and the relevant authority.
Exposure

- How exposed the elevation is to driving rain once the finish over the board is in service.
- Whether the existing wall shows damp, staining or salt, and whether the cause has been investigated.

- The board holds together on the cork's own resin, so it is one substance rather than granules held in a glue, which is why it behaves as it does when wetted.
- A rigid bio-based board is only as vapour-open as the render, paint or lining put over it, and that choice is frequently made later by someone else.
- Thickening a wall changes reveals, cills, downpipes, meter boxes and roof overhangs, and all of that is easier to resolve on a drawing than on site.
- Boards left standing uncovered through bad weather are a routine site problem for any insulation that is rendered over.
