Overview

What vinyl siding is

Vinyl siding is extruded from rigid polyvinyl chloride into long profiles that imitate lapped boards, shakes or vertical boarding. The colour is either mixed through the material or applied as a surface layer during production, and the profile carries a nailing flange with elongated slots along its top edge and an interlocking hem along its bottom edge.

It is a system rather than a set of boards. Starter strips, corner posts, channels around openings, soffit sections and finishing trims are all part of the same family, and they do the work of terminating and concealing the ends of the siding panels. Panels lock into one another and into these accessories, so a run of siding is effectively suspended from its top flange and held at its bottom edge by the panel below.

The behaviour that matters most is thermal movement. Plastic profiles lengthen and shorten noticeably as their surface temperature changes through the day and the year, and the whole system is designed to accommodate that: fixings sit in the centre of their slots, are not driven tight, and panels are cut short of the channels they sit in so they can slide. Over-fixing, nailing tight or cutting panels to a hard fit is the classic error and shows up later as waves, buckling and pulled fixings.

Installation dependency
The system is designed to hang, not to be clamped. Fixings are placed centrally in the slots and left slightly loose, and panels are cut short of channels so they can slide. Ignoring this is the most common cause of visible defects.
Weathering and exposure
Surface colour changes gradually under sunlight, and darker shades tend to show that change more clearly. Sheltered areas and exposed areas of the same elevation may drift apart in tone over time.
Moisture behaviour
The profiles shed water down the face and are deliberately not sealed at their joints, so water and air can move behind them. What is behind the siding, and how it drains, is where the real weather management sits.
Surface wear
Rigid plastic is more brittle in cold weather and can crack rather than dent under a sharp impact, which matters most at low level near doors, paths and vehicle routes.
Fire-related questions
Fire performance is assessed for the complete external wall build-up rather than for an individual cladding product. Requirements differ by building type, height and location, have changed considerably in several countries, and must be confirmed with a qualified professional and the relevant authority.
Repairability
Individual panels can often be unlocked and replaced using a purpose-made tool, but a replacement from a later production run may not match the weathered colour of the surrounding panels.
Appearance
Panel length, lap depth and the pattern of joints are set by the product rather than chosen freely, so overlaps and trim lines are a visible characteristic of the system rather than a detailing decision.
