Overview
What composite wood cladding is
Composite wood cladding is manufactured by mixing finely ground wood flour or wood fibre with a polymer binder, together with pigments, stabilisers and other additives, and extruding the mixture into board profiles. Many products add a co-extruded outer shell of polymer around the core, which changes the surface behaviour considerably and is one of the first things worth establishing about a given board.
It is often presented as an alternative to timber, but it is not timber and does not behave like it. Natural wood moves mainly across the grain in response to moisture; a composite board moves noticeably along its length in response to temperature, which is why end gaps and hidden clip fixings that permit sliding are central to how these boards are installed. The board cannot be planed, sanded back and refinished the way timber can, and the surface texture is moulded rather than grown.
Colour is a manufactured property. Most products lighten or settle during an initial period of exposure and then stabilise, and how far they move depends on the pigment system and the exposure. Uncapped boards behave differently from capped ones, particularly in how readily they take up moisture and how they respond to spills and staining. None of this is a defect; it is simply a different set of characteristics from the ones a timber-minded reader may expect.

- Installation dependency
- Thermal movement along the board length is the governing factor. Hidden clips that allow sliding, defined gaps at board ends and a fixed point arrangement are how manufacturers accommodate it, and their rules are product specific.
- Appearance
- Texture and grain are moulded during extrusion, so a pattern may repeat along a run. Seen at close range this reads differently from natural timber, which is worth judging in daylight on a full board rather than a sample chip.
- Weathering and exposure
- Most products lighten or shift in tone during an initial exposure period before settling. Sheltered and exposed parts of the same elevation may reach that settled tone at different times.
- Moisture behaviour
- The wood content means the board is not indifferent to water. Capped products present a polymer shell to the weather; uncapped ones expose the composite directly, and the two behave differently at cut ends and fixing points.
- Thermal behaviour
- Dark boards in strong sun can reach high surface temperatures, which increases length change and can matter where the cladding is within reach or close to other materials.
- Fire-related questions
- Fire behaviour is determined by the whole external wall build-up rather than by one product, and requirements differ by building type, height and location. Regulation in this area has changed significantly in several countries, so current requirements must be confirmed with a qualified professional and the relevant authority.
- Repairability
- A scratched or gouged board cannot be sanded back and refinished the way timber can. Individual boards can usually be replaced, but a new board will not have gone through the same initial colour settling.
Exposure

- How much direct sun each elevation receives, given that heat drives length change in these boards.
- Whether reflected light or heat from glazing could concentrate on part of the cladding.
- How close the lowest boards sit to paving, soil or planting where splash and staining occur.

- Whether the background is masonry or a framed wall, which changes fixing method and tolerance.
- How the boards meet windows, corners and the base of the wall, since trims are part of the system.

- Whether the moulded grain pattern repeats visibly along a run and whether that is acceptable.
