Overview

What stair nosing is

A stair nosing profile is the component fitted along the front edge of a tread, where the covering stops and the step edge begins. Most are extruded in aluminium, brass or a rigid polymer, and many carry a recessed channel that takes a separate insert in a contrasting colour. Others are formed as a solid section, or cast in place as part of a resin or terrazzo stair.

It is not a floor covering and it is not chosen with one. The covering, whether carpet, resilient sheet, tile or timber, is selected for the space; the profile is selected for the edge condition it has to resolve, which means the thickness of that covering, whether the covering is turned over the edge or stopped short of it, and how the section can be held to the tread beneath. A stair can be re-covered without changing the profile, and a profile can be renewed without disturbing the covering on the going.

Profiles differ mainly in how they are held. Some are surface fixed with screws through the horizontal leg, some sit in a base rail fixed down first, some are bonded, and some are built into the tread construction before any covering arrives. Visual contrast between the profile, its insert and the tread is a recurring subject in accessibility review, and what is required in a particular building is a matter for the relevant authority and the project team rather than for a materials page.

Installation dependency
Fixing method governs almost everything else. A surface screwed section, a base rail system, a bonded profile and one cast into the tread each demand different preparation and a different sequence against the covering.
Substrate dependency
The tread has to hold the fixing. Timber, concrete, stone and steel stairs behave differently under screws or adhesive, and an existing stair often needs making good before any section can bear evenly along its length.
Appearance
Contrast between the profile, its insert and the covering is the visible decision here. Metal finish, insert colour and the width of the exposed leg all change how strongly the step edge reads from above and on the approach.
Surface wear
Every footfall lands close to this component, so it takes concentrated traffic on a narrow line. Inserts are consumable in many systems and are meant to be renewed while the profile itself stays in place.

  • A base rail system needs setting out and fixing before the covering arrives on the stair.
  • On a re-covering job the old edge has to be made good so the new section bears evenly along it.
  • Where the covering is turned over the edge, the profile has to accommodate that thickness at the arris.
