Dry Shake Floor Hardener (Monolithic Topping)

Describes a topping that must be decided before concrete is placed, and separates it from grinding an existing slab or treating one chemically after it has hardened.

What dry shake hardener is

A dry shake is a factory-blended dry powder of cement, graded hard aggregate and usually pigment. The aggregate may be a natural quartz, an emery or synthetic mineral, or metallic particles, and it is that choice which sets how the finished surface resists abrasion. The blend arrives in bags and is spread over concrete that is still green, in more than one pass, so that it draws moisture from the slab beneath and becomes part of it.

This is where it parts company with polished concrete, the finish it is most often confused with. Polishing works on a slab that has already hardened: the surface is ground back mechanically and refined until the slab's own aggregate and paste are exposed and closed. A dry shake adds new material of a different and harder composition at the moment of finishing, so the wearing surface is not the concrete that was poured but a monolithic layer formed on top of it.

The consequence for an owner is timing. A dry shake has to be agreed and ordered before the pour, and it is applied by the concrete finishing team within a narrow window while the slab is still workable. Once the concrete has set, only grinding, a chemical treatment or an applied coating remains. Its nearest sibling is granolithic screed flooring, which uses the same cement and hard aggregate on green concrete but places it wet as a trowelled topping of real section; a dry shake is broadcast dry and worked in, so it has no thickness of its own to grind or re-treat.

Surface wear
Abrasion behaviour comes from the aggregate in the blend rather than from the concrete beneath. Quartz, emery and metallic aggregates behave differently, and any grading a supplier quotes belongs to its own test conditions rather than to your floor.
Installation dependency
Application happens within the finishing operation itself, broadcast in passes and worked in with power floats and trowels. It depends entirely on the concrete team's judgement of when the slab is ready, which is why experience with the material matters.
Appearance
The finish is a dense, closed, lightly burnished surface whose colour comes from pigment in the blend. Variation between bays, trowel burnish marks and slight mottling are normal and should be expected rather than treated as defects.
Substrate dependency
The topping is only as sound as the slab it is monolithic with. Mix design, water content, curing and slab flatness all shape the outcome, and the topping supplier usually has views on each of them.
Repairability
Because the layer is shallow and integral, damage exposes ordinary concrete beneath it. Repairs are made with patching materials rather than more dry shake, and they will not match the surrounding surface in colour or texture.
Maintenance
The surface is normally cleaned mechanically and may be treated later with a densifier or sealer. What is appropriate depends on the blend used, so the supplier's guidance is the starting point rather than general concrete practice.
Documentation
A specification for this finish covers the blend, the spread rate, the curing method and the finishing sequence. Those documents also record the colour reference, which is the only reliable basis for any future extension of the floor.

  • What traffic will the floor carry, including wheel type, load and how often it passes over the same lines?
  • Will oils, salts, chemicals or hot material fall on this surface, and has the supplier been told?
  • Is the floor internal, sheltered or fully exposed to weather and to freezing conditions?
  • Will the slab be exposed to strong sunlight or draughts while it is being finished and cured?
  • Is any part of this floor likely to be covered later, and would that change the case for a topping at all?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The concrete mix, its water content and its bleed characteristics all affect whether a dry shake can be worked in properly.
  • Slab flatness is established by the finishing operation, and the topping does not correct a poorly levelled pour.
  • Curing follows immediately and has to be agreed, since the topping and slab are drying as one.
  • Joint layout in the slab passes straight through the topping and remains visible in the finished floor.
  • Any reinforcement, membrane or insulation below the slab is part of the same design conversation.

  • Colour is pigment in a cementitious blend, so it will not have the evenness of a factory-applied coating.
  • Trowel burnish, bay boundaries and pour lines are part of how this floor looks and cannot be edited out.

  • What is expected to happen at joints and slab edges, which are always the first areas to suffer?
  • Has the supplier been asked what happens where the topping is locally worn through to the concrete?

  • What cleaning regime does the supplier describe for this particular blend and colour?
  • Is a densifier or sealer proposed later, and what does that do to appearance and upkeep?
  • How would a damaged area be patched, and is the visual result acceptable in this space?
  • Who holds the record of the blend and colour used, in case the floor is extended?
  • How are joints maintained and resealed over time, given they carry most of the wear?

  • The topping must be specified and delivered before the pour, and cannot be introduced afterwards.

  • Power floating equipment and enough operatives must be on site for the whole area being poured that day.

  • Protection during the remainder of the build is what usually decides how the floor looks at handover.
