What entrance matting is
An entrance matting system is a designed run of surfaces at a door, assembled from components rather than bought as a single mat. Open aluminium or rubber carriers hold replaceable inserts of brush strip, rubber scraper or textile rib, and these are commonly followed by a denser absorbent field of textile matting or matting tile once inside the door line.
The difference from a robust carpet tile is that matting is zoned and dimensioned along the direction of travel. A coarse leading zone is there to dislodge grit, a following zone is there to lift the moisture that remains, and the run is set out so that each foot meets it more than once on the way in. A carpet tile field, however heavy its construction, is one covering doing one job evenly across an area.
Because carriers are normally set into a recess formed in the structure, matting is a decision taken while the floor is being built rather than when finishes are chosen. The recess has to be formed, given a route for water where it sits at an external door, and coordinated so the matting arrives at the same finished level as the covering around it. Inserts are replaceable, so the carriers stay in place while inserts are lifted out for cleaning and renewed one at a time.

- Appearance
- Carriers read as a ribbed grid across the entrance and their direction is part of the composition. Insert colours differ in how obviously they hold soil between cleans, which is worth seeing in a working entrance rather than on a sample board.
- Surface wear
- Traffic here is concentrated on a small area, and the leading edge of the run takes the most of it. Textile inserts flatten with use, which is why systems are built around inserts that can be renewed while the carriers stay in place.
- Moisture behaviour
- The absorbent zone holds water that has come off footwear, and it has to be able to give that water up again between uses. In an unventilated recess at an external door this becomes a standing problem rather than a passing one.
