Overview
What linoleum flooring is
Linoleum is made by oxidising linseed oil into a cement, blending it with natural resins, wood or cork flour, ground limestone and pigments, and pressing the mixture onto a backing, most often a woven jute fabric. It is supplied in sheet and in tile form, and the colour runs through the body of the material rather than sitting on the surface as a printed film.
That composition is the most useful thing to know about it, because the word lino is used loosely for almost any smooth resilient floor. Vinyl is a polyvinyl chloride product; linoleum is not vinyl and is not related to it. The two look similar once laid, but they wear differently, respond to cleaning chemicals differently, and behave differently against a damp cementitious base.
Being a natural oil-based material, linoleum keeps curing after it is laid and becomes harder over time. Fresh material often carries an amber cast from the linseed oil, which typically fades once the floor is exposed to daylight, so a newly laid floor may not yet be the colour it settles at. It is also sensitive to alkalinity, which is why moisture rising through a cementitious base is a specific concern here rather than a general one.

- Substrate dependency
- The covering is thin and follows the base, so smoothing is part of the work rather than a refinement. Where the base is a slab or screed, its moisture condition governs whether a bonded installation is realistic at all.
- Appearance
- Colour and pattern run through the body rather than being printed on it, so wear does not reveal a different layer underneath. The marbled and flecked look is characteristic of the way the material is mixed and pressed.
- Maintenance
- Cleaning products are not interchangeable with those used on polymer coverings. Many floors are protected by a maintenance dressing, and the regime for renewing it comes from the manufacturer rather than from habit.
- Repairability
- Surface marks can sometimes be worked back into the body of the material because the colour is not a surface film. Sheet is patched by cutting a piece in, while tiles can be lifted and replaced individually.
- Surface wear
- The material continues to harden after laying, so the floor tends to become tougher underfoot with time. Wear usually shows as a change in sheen along traffic routes well before it shows as any loss of colour.

- Sheet linoleum is cut and fitted with planned seams, while tiles are set out to a grid. Adhesive selection and the way the material is conditioned before laying both come from the supplier's own guidance.

- A cementitious base carries alkalinity with any moisture in it, and that is the specific risk for this material.
- A smoothing layer is normally required, because the covering conforms closely to whatever lies beneath it.
- Timber decks generally need an overlay board so that board joints and fixings do not read through.
- Where a surface damp-suppressant or moisture control layer is used, it is chosen together with the adhesive.
- Old coverings and adhesive residues change what the new adhesive can grip and are dealt with beforehand.

- Service life reflects the base, the adhesive, the maintenance regime and the traffic together.
