Overview
What softwood floorboards is
Softwood floorboards are sawn softwood machined into boards for laying across joists, most often with a tongue on one edge and a groove on the other so that adjacent boards interlock. Square edged boarding is also used. Species are the familiar construction softwoods, and boards arrive in a range of widths with a moisture condition that reflects how they have been dried and stored.
The distinction from structural softwood is one of role rather than of species. Structural softwood is graded framing material specified by strength class and used for joists, studs, rafters and plates, where it will be covered over and never seen. Floorboards are a machined board format whose job is to span between joists, and which is frequently sanded and finished in place so that the structural deck and the visible floor are the same piece of timber.
That double duty explains most of what people notice later. Fixings are visible unless the boards are secret nailed through the tongue. Boards laid at too high a moisture content shrink across their width once the building is heated, which is how gaps open. Squeaks and springiness trace back to fixing, board thickness and joist spacing rather than to the timber itself. Where a covering is going on top instead, the boarding becomes a substrate and its flatness and joints become the issue.

- Substrate dependency
- Boarding is itself the substrate when a covering goes on top. Board joints, cupped edges, proud fixings and any movement in the deck all transmit into whatever is laid over it, which is why an overlay board is so often added.
- Moisture behaviour
- Softwood moves noticeably with moisture, and mostly across the width of the board. The condition of the timber when it is fixed, and the humidity the finished building will run at, largely determine whether gaps open later.
- Installation dependency
- Boards are cramped up and fixed to every joist they cross, with joints staggered and landing over a support. Secret nailing through the tongue hides fixings but changes how boards can be lifted again afterwards.
- Appearance
- Softwood shows knots, resin pockets and a wide colour range, and it takes dents readily. Sanded and clear finished, it reads as a working floor rather than as a refined one, which is usually the reason it is chosen.
- Acoustic behaviour
- Boarding is a light, rigid deck and sound passes through the floor as a whole. Any improvement is a property of the complete build-up, including what sits between and below the joists, rather than of the boards themselves.
- Repairability
- Individual boards can be cut out and replaced, and a screwed deck can be lifted for access below. Replacing a board in an old floor means matching width and thickness that may no longer be a standard size.
- Surface wear
- Softwood is easily marked, and a floor left exposed accumulates dents and scuffs quickly. It can be sanded, but the board thickness above the tongue is what limits how often that is possible.

- Will the building be dry and heated before the boards are fixed, or afterwards?
- What humidity range will the room run at once it is occupied?
- Is there an unheated space below the floor, and how does that affect the boards above it?

- Joist spacing, span and loading govern what boarding can do and are matters for a qualified professional.
- Services running through or above the joists dictate where boards can be fixed and later lifted.
- Insulation and any resilient layer within the floor zone are part of the assembly the boards sit on.
- Where a covering will follow, an overlay board is often needed so that board joints do not read through.
- Perimeter gaps under the skirting allow the boarded field to move, and they need to survive later work.
- Stair strings, hearths and thresholds interrupt the boarded field and are detailed before the deck is laid.

- Knots, resin and colour variation are inherent to softwood and cannot be graded out entirely.
- Board width changes the feel of the floor considerably, and wide boards move more across their width.
- Direction of laying relative to the main sight line and the joists is both a visual and a structural question.
- Fixing heads left visible are a deliberate look, and filling them later rarely disappears completely.
- Softwood accepts stain unevenly around knots, which is worth seeing on a sample before deciding.

- What is the plan when boards cup or gap after the first heating season?
- Are there points where furniture or appliances will load the boards between joists?

- A covering bonded straight onto boarding telegraphs every board joint, and no amount of care taken over the covering itself prevents it.
