Overview
What underlayment board is
Floor underlayment board is a thin sheet material fixed down over an existing deck purely to give the covering above it a continuous, stable plane to sit on. Depending on the covering and the deck it may be a plywood, a hardboard, a fibre-cement sheet or a purpose-made lining panel, and it is nailed, stapled or screwed at close centres across the whole sheet rather than only at the edges.
It solves the same problem as a self-levelling compound by opposite means, and it is not a dry screed board either. A levelling compound is mixed with water, poured, allowed to find its own level, left to cure and then left again to dry, and it fills hollows because it flows into them. A dry screed board is a load-spreading plate bedded on granulate or insulation and levelled as it is laid. An underlayment board is a thin lining: it introduces no water, but it fills nothing, lies on the high points and takes its plane from whatever it is fixed to, so real hollows still need levelling first.
Everything that goes wrong with this layer shows through the covering above rather than in the board itself. Proud fixing heads, unfilled joints, swollen board edges and differences in sheet thickness all telegraph through a thin vinyl or a resilient tile, sometimes weeks after the floor was laid, which is why the fixing pattern and joint treatment set out by the covering manufacturer matter more than the choice of sheet.

- Substrate dependency
- The sheet takes its plane from the deck below it. Any dip, hump or rocking board is still there afterwards, so assessing and correcting the existing floor comes first rather than being delegated to the lining.
- Installation dependency
- Fixings go in across the face of the sheet at the centres the covering manufacturer sets, not just around the perimeter. Heads must finish below the surface, because a single proud fixing will eventually appear as a mark in a thin covering.
- Appearance
- Telegraphing is the characteristic failure. Joints, fixings, debris and thickness differences between sheets all read through a thin resilient covering under raking light, sometimes only after the floor has been walked on for a while.
- Moisture behaviour
- Most lining sheets are timber-based and respond to water by swelling at the cut edges. Where wetting is possible the deck build-up, the covering and any tanking are a single question for a qualified professional rather than a board choice.
- Repairability
- A damaged area can be cut out and a new piece let in, but the joint has to be supported and filled, and the covering above will need renewing across that area. Localised repair is rarely invisible in a thin floor.
- Documentation
- The covering manufacturer, not the board maker, usually dictates what lining is acceptable, how it is fixed and how the joints are treated. That literature is the reference point when a floor is disputed later.
Exposure

- Could this floor be wetted by an appliance, a spillage or an overflow at any point in its life?
- Is the deck below dry, and has anyone tested rather than assumed that?
- What is the humidity in the building at the time of laying, and how are the sheets stored beforehand?
- Will heavy appliances be rolled across the floor into position after the covering is laid?

- Loose, springy or rocking boards are refixed before anything is laid over them.

- The covering above dictates fixing centres, joint filling and how the surface is finished before it is laid.
- Skirtings, thresholds and appliance heights all have to accommodate the extra build-up.

- Cut edges at doorways and around units are where water damage and swelling begin.
- The covering manufacturer's literature usually governs this layer, even though a different trade supplies it.
