Overview

What copper sheet is

Copper sheet is rolled copper supplied in sheet and coil for fully supported roofing, cladding and flashing work. It is soft enough to be folded, dressed and seamed with hand tools, and it work-hardens as it is formed, which is why traditional practice relies on standing seams, batten rolls and welted joints rather than on fixings driven through the face of the sheet.

Left outdoors it changes appearance in stages. Bright metal dulls to browns, then to darker tones, and in many exposed positions eventually to a green carbonate patina. How far and how evenly that goes depends on exposure, orientation, pollution and how freely rain washes the surface, so sheltered areas often stay brown for a long time while washed areas above them turn.

Copper is not fixed rigidly. Fully supported sheet sits on a continuous deck over a separating layer and is held by concealed clips that let the metal expand and contract, with bay sizes limited for the same reason. Rainwater running off copper carries traces of the metal with it, which is why staining of surfaces below, and the choice of metals downstream of the run-off, are both design questions.

Weathering and exposure
Colour change is the defining characteristic. Bright copper darkens through brown tones and, where rain washes it freely, can develop a green patina. Sheltered and rain-shadowed areas change more slowly, so an elevation can read unevenly for years.
Thermal behaviour
Sheet metal expands and contracts as temperature changes, which is why copper roofing uses concealed clips, limited bay lengths and welted or seamed joints instead of rigid fixings driven through the visible face.
Moisture behaviour
The underside matters as much as the top surface. Condensation trapped between the sheet and the deck can attack the metal from below, so the build-up, the separating layer and the ventilation strategy all form part of the design.
Substrate dependency
Copper is fully supported, so it takes the shape of whatever it sits on. Deck flatness, proud fixing heads, board joints and any debris left behind all telegraph through into the finished surface.
Installation dependency
Seaming, welting and dressing are skilled hand operations. The quality of the folds, the clips and the laps decides how the roof behaves, which makes this specialist sheet metal work rather than general roofing.
Repairability
Local repairs can be let into copper work by a skilled sheet metal worker, but new material stands out bright against weathered surroundings and takes a long time to tone in with it.
Appearance
Panel widths, seam direction and the way seams are resolved at ridges, hips and edges are visible design decisions, and they are normally agreed before the roof is set out and cut.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • A continuous, flat, dry deck is needed, since the sheet follows every irregularity beneath it.
  • A separating layer between the deck and the sheet forms part of the specified build-up.
  • Ventilation, or a designed vapour strategy behind the sheet, addresses underside condensation.
  • Clip type, clip fixings and the deck material work together and are chosen as one set.
  • Junctions with gutters, upstands and other materials absorb most of the detailing effort.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Pre-patinated and pre-oxidised sheet is made, and gives a different starting point from mill finish.
  • Patination is uneven across an elevation and rarely settles to a single uniform colour.
  • Seam spacing and direction are strongly visible and set the rhythm of the whole surface.
  • Handling marks and fingerprints show on new bright sheet and weather out at their own pace.
  • New copper let into old work stands out clearly until it has weathered for a long time.

  • Where does copper run-off go, and what surfaces does it pass over on the way?
  • Is foot traffic expected for maintenance, and is a walkway route being provided?

  • The green patina people picture does not arrive evenly, or at the same pace, across an elevation.
  • Sheltered areas under an overhang can stay brown while washed areas above them change colour.
  • Run-off can mark masonry, render and paving below long before anyone thinks to look down.
  • Every proud fixing head or piece of grit left on the deck can show as a mark in the sheet.
  • Bay lengths are limited by movement, so a long roof reads as a series of joints by design.
