Overview

What zinc sheet is

Architectural zinc sheet is rolled zinc with small additions of titanium and copper, which make it more workable and more stable than unalloyed zinc. It is supplied as sheet and coil for fully supported roofing and cladding, worked with standing seams, welts and folds, and is soft enough to shape on a bench while remaining considerably stiffer than lead.

Outdoors it develops a surface layer of zinc carbonate, which gives the material its familiar matt grey appearance. Mill finish sheet starts bright and dulls over time, and that change is uneven where rain washes some areas and not others. Pre-weathered sheet is treated at the works to give a more consistent grey from the outset, and is produced in a range of tones.

The behaviour that most distinguishes zinc from copper is its sensitivity on the underside and in contact. Moisture trapped behind unventilated sheet can corrode it from below, so the build-up beneath is central to the design. Contact with damp acidic timbers, and run-off arriving from certain other materials, are also recognised considerations, which is why separating layers and drainage routes are specified rather than improvised.

Weathering and exposure
Mill finish zinc arrives bright and settles to matt grey unevenly, following the pattern of rain washing and shelter across the elevation. Pre-weathered material starts closer to its final tone but continues to change gradually.
Moisture behaviour
Underside corrosion is the classic zinc failure route. Moisture held between the sheet and the deck, with no ventilation or vapour strategy behind it, attacks the metal in the one place nobody can inspect.
Thermal behaviour
Zinc moves noticeably with temperature, and can be heard doing so on a warm day. Clip arrangements, limited bay lengths and expansion details are how sheet work absorbs that movement without distorting.
Substrate dependency
The sheet is fully supported, so deck flatness and cleanliness show through into the finished surface, and the deck material itself has to be one the metal can sit against without difficulty.
Installation dependency
This is bench-and-hand sheet metal work: folding, seaming and welting by trained roofers, with clips fixed to the deck rather than fixings driven through the face of the sheet.
Repairability
Patches and let-in repairs are possible for a skilled sheet worker, but new material contrasts with weathered zinc and takes considerable time to settle towards the surrounding tone.
Appearance
Seam spacing, panel direction and the treatment of corners and edges are all visible on the finished elevation, and pre-weathered tones vary between products, so samples are worth seeing outdoors.

  • Is the atmosphere coastal, or otherwise likely to carry salt onto the finished surface?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The deck material and its moisture content are part of the specification, not merely a base.
  • A separating layer or structured underlay between deck and sheet is normally required.
  • Ventilation paths, or a designed warm roof build-up, address underside condensation.
  • Clips, fixings and the deck have to work as a set for the movement strategy to function.
  • Junctions with gutters, upstands and other metals need detailing before work begins.

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • A dry, flat, correctly specified deck completed before sheet work begins.

  • Working temperature matters, since zinc is less workable when it is cold.
