Overview
What weathering steel is
Weathering steel is structural steel with small alloy additions that change the way it rusts. Instead of the flaking, progressive rust of plain carbon steel, it develops a dense, tightly adherent surface layer that slows further attack on the metal underneath. It is used unpainted, so on this material the surface is both the protection and the finish at the same time.
The patina is not automatic. It develops through repeated cycles of wetting and drying, which means the surface has to get wet and then be able to dry out again. Situations that keep it permanently damp, that shelter it from rain entirely, that bury part of it in soil, or that expose it to persistent salt can all prevent a stable layer forming, so location matters more here than it does for a coated steel.
During the first period outdoors the surface sheds fine rust particles, and rainwater running off carries that colour with it. Concrete, paving, render and light-coloured masonry below can be marked, sometimes lastingly, so drip details, planting, drainage and the choice of surfaces beneath the element all belong to the design rather than being dealt with afterwards.
