Solvent Borne Alkyd Paint for Trim and Joinery

Overview

What alkyd paint is

An alkyd is a polyester resin modified with drying oils, dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent and loaded with pigment and extenders. The paint dries in two stages that are often confused: first the solvent leaves, which makes the surface touch dry, and then the resin oxidises and cross links, which is what actually hardens it. Full hardness therefore arrives considerably later than the point at which the surface feels dry.

The library's emulsion paint entry covers the water borne alternative, and the difference is not simply the carrier. Emulsion is a dispersion of polymer particles that coalesce into a film as water leaves, which suits large wall areas and quick recoating. Alkyd flows out before it sets, so brush marks level themselves and the dried film is smoother, harder and better able to take the knocks that joinery, doors and skirtings receive.

Two behaviours follow from the chemistry and shape most decisions. Alkyd films continue to harden and embrittle with age, so on timber that moves seasonally an old film eventually cracks rather than stretches. Pale alkyd shades also yellow, markedly so in cupboards, behind doors and in rooms with little daylight. Neither is a fault; both are predictable, and both are why the choice between alkyd and a water borne trim paint is a real decision rather than a habit.

Appearance
The paint levels as it sets, so brush and roller texture largely disappears and the surface reads as smooth. Higher sheens make that flatness an asset and every substrate defect a liability.
Surface wear
The cured film is comparatively hard, which is why the family persists on doors, handrails and skirtings. How it performs in a given house still depends on preparation and on the substrate beneath.
Substrate dependency
Knots, resinous timber, bare metal and previously coated surfaces each demand a different priming decision, and the primer choice governs the life of the finish more than the topcoat does.
Maintenance
Redecoration usually involves abrading and recoating, but an aged, hardened film may need more thorough preparation, and that is assessed on the surface rather than predicted here.
Repairability
Touching in a levelled gloss surface rarely disappears, because the repair shows as a difference in sheen even when the colour matches. Whole element recoating is the more reliable route.
Installation dependency
Solvent carried products need ventilation arrangements during and after application; emissions and any classification vary by formulation and belong to the manufacturer's documentation.

  • Factory primed components carry their own requirements, which take priority over general practice.
  • Moisture in the substrate undermines the whole system regardless of how well the paint itself is applied.
