What shellac and knotting is
Shellac is a natural resin dissolved in alcohol. In decorating it appears as knotting solution, as a pigmented stain-blocking sealer and, in fine finishing, as french polish. The defining behaviour comes from the solvent: because the carrier is alcohol rather than water or white spirit, the dried film acts as a barrier to substances that would otherwise dissolve into or migrate through the coatings that follow.
That is what separates it from a general wall primer or sealer, which is chosen to even out porosity, improve adhesion and give the topcoat a uniform base. A shellac-based product is applied to a problem rather than to a wall. Resinous knots in softwood, water and nicotine staining, crayon, felt tip, soot and lingering odours all bleed through ordinary primers, sometimes long after the room has been finished. Shellac is the traditional answer to that specific failure, and it is usually applied over the affected areas rather than over the whole surface.
It has its own limits. The film is hard and brittle, it is sensitive to alcohol and to heat, and it is not a weathering material. On exterior joinery, knotting is a preparation stage beneath a protective system rather than a coating in its own right. What goes over it matters too, because not every finish is documented as suitable over a shellac base.

- Substrate dependency
- It is chosen for what is in the substrate rather than for what the substrate is made of. Resin, dye, soot, tar and odour compounds are the targets, and identifying which is present changes whether it will work.
- Moisture behaviour
- Blocking a stain does not stop the water that made it. Where damp is active, sealing the mark hides a symptom while the underlying cause remains a matter for proper investigation.
- Appearance
- Clear versions leave an amber cast on pale timber and pigmented stain blockers are opaque. Either can read through a thin topcoat, so where the barrier was used may remain faintly visible.
- Repairability
- A missed knot or stain reappears through the finished decoration, and putting it right means going back through the topcoat locally, so thoroughness at the barrier stage determines the repair burden.
- Installation dependency
- The material is alcohol-borne, dries quickly and does not behave like a water-borne primer, which changes the sequence of work and the equipment that can be used with it.
- Maintenance
- Once buried under the finish it needs no upkeep at all, but the record of where it was used matters a great deal to anyone redecorating later.
- Documentation
- Ask the manufacturer what the product is documented to block and what may be applied over it, since not every topcoat is described as suitable over a shellac base.

- Not every topcoat is documented as suitable over shellac, and finding that out afterwards is expensive.
- Alcohol-borne products need different handling from the water-borne materials most decorating now uses.
