What slate dimension stone is
Slate is a fine grained metamorphic rock formed when mudstone or shale is compressed and heated enough for platy minerals such as mica and chlorite to grow in parallel alignment. That alignment produces slaty cleavage, a plane of easy splitting created by directed pressure, which commonly cuts across the original sedimentary layering rather than following it.
The sibling this entry exists to separate from is natural slate roofing. There, slate is dressed into thin units, holed or hooked, hung on battens and judged on lap and fixing. As dimension stone the same rock is worked into thicker riven, sawn or honed slabs for floors, hearths, cills, treads and worktops, bedded or bonded to a substrate, so the questions become substrate, movement, edge working and finish.
As a silicate rock, slate is not etched by the mild household acids that dull calcite stones such as marble and limestone. Its weaknesses are different in kind: some slates carry iron sulphide or carbonate inclusions that can rust or bleed at the surface, and a freshly riven face sheds fine flakes for a period after laying until the loose material has gone.

- Appearance
- Riven faces carry the split texture of the cleavage plane and vary in level, honed faces are flat and even, and leathered or brushed faces sit between the two. The same quarry can supply all three with quite different results.

- Slates vary considerably in how much water they take up, and a dense one behaves very differently from a soft, more absorbent bed. Treat absorbency as a question about the named quarry material rather than about slate in general.
- Surface wear
- Because the rock splits along cleavage, damage often takes the form of surface flaking or spalling of a thin layer rather than the rounding you would see on a granular stone.
- Maintenance
- Some owners oil or dress slate floors to deepen the colour, and some prefer the drier natural look. Either way this is an appearance decision, and the manufacturer or supplier of any product used is the authority on it.
- Repairability
- Individual units can often be lifted and replaced, but matching a later piece to a floor that has darkened with use is difficult, which is why keeping attic stock from the original delivery matters.
- Substrate dependency
- Slate slabs are bedded or bonded onto whatever lies beneath them, so flatness, stiffness and moisture condition of that base do more to determine the result than the choice of quarry.
- Installation dependency
- Cleavage means slate cuts and drills differently from granular stones, and edge working, mitres and sink cut outs on worktops need fabricators used to the material.

- If the floor is to be oiled or dressed, what product is proposed and who holds the record of what was used?
