Overview
What ms polymer sealant is
MS polymer sealant is built on a polymer chain whose ends carry reactive silane groups. Those groups react with moisture from the air, so the material cures from a gunned paste into a flexible solid without releasing acetic acid and without isocyanate chemistry in the formulation. It is supplied in cartridges and foil packs, and the same family is sold both as a jointing sealant and as a gap-filling construction adhesive.
The distinction worth holding on to is against the two sealants owners already know. Silicone cures to a rubber that tolerates water well but, in most grades, refuses paint, so the bead itself is the finish. Polyurethane is tough and usually paintable but is isocyanate-based, smells stronger during application and is fussier about damp backgrounds. Hybrids were developed to take the paintability and adhesion of polyurethane together with the weathering stability and neutral, non-acidic cure of silicone, and many grades are described as bonding to slightly damp substrates without a primer.
What is given up deserves saying plainly. A hybrid generally accommodates less joint movement than a low-modulus silicone made for that purpose, so it is not an automatic substitute in a designed movement joint. Continuous immersion and long chemical contact fall outside what most grades are formulated for. Movement capability, primer requirements and any exclusions are properties of the specific product, and only its own documentation answers them.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Substrate dependency
- Adhesion is described across a wide range of backgrounds, including several that would need a primer with other chemistries, but that list is product-specific. Porous masonry, plastics, coated metals and treated timber all behave differently, and the manufacturer's adhesion table is the only reliable check.
- Moisture behaviour
- The cure depends on moisture from the air, and many grades are described as tolerating a damp background. That is a different thing from tolerating standing water or immersion, and nothing here should be read as making a joint watertight on its own.
- Appearance
- Taking paint is the practical reason the material gets chosen, but paint and sealant still move at different rates, and compatibility with the particular coating is a question for both manufacturers rather than something to assume.
- Installation dependency
- Joint preparation, backing and tooling settle the shape of the bead and how it carries movement. A hybrid pressed into a dusty, contaminated or badly formed joint fails in exactly the way any other chemistry would.
- Repairability
- Cured hybrid comes out mechanically, and remnants left on the joint faces interfere with whatever is applied next. Renewal is a cutting-out job rather than an overband, so access to the joint decides how practical renewal will be.
- Maintenance
- Sealed joints are consumable elements inspected and renewed on a cycle set by exposure and movement rather than by the calendar alone. Service life for a given joint is not something a reference page can state.

Exposure and environmental conditions
- Will this joint be wetted regularly, occasionally, or only by the humidity of the room around it?
- Is the bead going to be in direct sunlight for part of the day once the building is finished?
- Does the manufacturer describe this particular grade as intended for external use at all?
- Will cleaning products, run-off or splash reach the joint during normal use of the space?
- Do the two materials either side of the joint move at different rates with heat or moisture?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Adhesion without a primer is claimed for named substrates, so what is actually present on site has to be checked against that list.
- A damp background is tolerated by some grades and excluded by others, which makes the grade rather than the family the deciding factor.
- Whether the joint has a backing behind the bead governs how the sealant is able to stretch when the joint opens.
- Where the bead meets tapes, membranes or insulation, compatibility between those products is a manufacturer's question.
- Painting over the line adds a third material to the joint, and the coating has to tolerate the movement as well.

- The bead is usually intended to be decorated, so how well it takes a coating matters more than the colour it arrives in.
- Left undecorated, hybrids read differently from silicone in sheen and texture, which shows where the two meet on one elevation.
- A painted line becomes hard to find later, which matters when someone has to identify and renew the joint years afterwards.
- Paint films can craze over a joint that is moving even where the sealant beneath them is completely sound.
- Colour matching between cartridge batches is a manufacturer's question where a long run of bead will stay visible.

- The convenience of one cartridge for every joint is exactly how wet-area and movement joints end up with the wrong material.
- Primerless adhesion is a claim about named substrates and their condition, not a general property of the chemistry.
- Hybrids are frequently chosen for smell and paintability, and the movement question is then never asked at all.
- Bonding grades and jointing grades from the same family look alike on the shelf and behave differently in a joint.
- A joint that was designed to move can be locked solid by careless application into an unbacked gap.
