Handmade Glazed Clay Tile (Irregular Wall Tile)

Why a hand-formed, hand-glazed clay tile behaves as a variable product rather than a calibrated one, and what that means for setting out, jointing, wastage and acceptance.

Overview

What handmade glazed tile is

A handmade glazed clay tile is shaped by hand from clay pressed into a simple mould, dried, then glazed by dipping or brushing and fired. Every stage leaves evidence in the finished unit: an undulating face, a plan size that shifts slightly from tile to tile, an arris that is soft rather than sharp, glaze that pools thickly at edges and thins over high points, and colour that shifts with position in the kiln.

Its closest sibling is the machine-pressed ceramic tile, and the difference is calibration. A pressed tile is made to a controlled size, is often rectified afterwards, and is graded so that shade variation stays within declared limits, which is what allows narrow, even joints and rapid fixing. A handmade tile is not calibrated at all. Joints have to be wider and are adjusted as work proceeds, the adhesive bed has to take up thickness differences, and a much larger wastage allowance is needed because tiles are sorted and some are set aside.

Fine crazing in the glaze - a network of hair cracks known as craquelure - is a characteristic of many of these glazes rather than a fault, and it is usually described as such by the maker. It changes how the surface takes up residue and how it is cleaned. Because so much of the product is variable by intention, what counts as acceptable should be agreed in advance from a laid sample area rather than from a single tile held in the hand.

Appearance
Shade, size and flatness vary tile by tile because each one is formed and glazed by hand and fired in uneven heat. The finish is read across the whole panel, where that variation becomes movement rather than error.
Installation dependency
Nothing is calibrated, so the tiler sorts, dry-lays and sets out before fixing, adjusts the adhesive bed to absorb thickness differences, and works to wider joints than a pressed tile would ever need.
Surface wear
Glaze thins where it runs over a raised or irregular arris, so chipping at edges and corners is the usual form of damage rather than wear spread evenly across the face.
Maintenance
The glaze itself cleans easily, but crazing and wider joints hold residue, so the grout chosen and the cleaning products used matter more to the long-term look than the tile does.
Moisture behaviour
The glaze closes the face while the body behind it is not vitrified, and a crazed glaze is not a continuous barrier. Any use where water is present depends on the assembly behind the tile rather than on the tile alone.

Ask for the maker's stated dimensional tolerance, its written description of crazing and shade variation, and the wastage allowance it advises for the pattern being laid.

  • How much direct water will reach this surface, and what sits behind it in the construction?
  • Is the area subject to steam, cooking grease or repeated wiping that could collect in the crazing?
  • Is any part of the panel exposed to strong direct sunlight that would exaggerate shade variation?
  • Will the tile ever be used outside an enclosed heated space, and has the maker been asked about that?

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The background must be flat and stable, because an uneven tile on an uneven wall compounds both problems.
  • The adhesive bed carries the thickness variation, so the fixing method is chosen with that in mind.
  • Internal and external corners need a resolution agreed in advance, since the tiles are not mitred easily.
  • Junctions with worktops, joinery and sanitaryware need a movement detail designed by the installer.
  • Wall fixings and penetrations through the panel need setting out before tiling, as drilling a soft glaze risks chipping.

  • The panel reads as a field of shifting colour, and single tiles will look wrong when judged in isolation.
  • Glaze pooling gives deeper colour at the edges of each tile, outlining the units even before grouting.
  • Grout colour has an unusually strong effect here, because joints are wider and their edges are irregular.
  • Crazing catches light and, over time, may catch residue, which some owners value and others do not.
  • Setting out has to decide whether joints are kept regular or allowed to follow the tiles.
  • Cut edges expose the unglazed body, so cuts are planned into corners and terminations wherever possible.

  • What will this surface be knocked by in daily use, and are the vulnerable arrises protected?
  • How does the maker describe the glaze in terms of marking and everyday cleaning?
  • If a tile chips, are matching spares from the same firing available to replace it?
  • Is anything heavy being fixed through the tiled panel, and how has that been detailed?

  • What cleaning routine does the maker accept for this glaze, and what does it rule out?
  • How is grout in wider joints kept clean, and what happens if it discolours?
  • Can a single damaged tile be cut out and replaced without disturbing its neighbours?
  • Are spare tiles from the original delivery being stored for that purpose?

Installation

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Tiles are sorted and dry-laid before fixing so that variation is distributed across the panel deliberately.
  • A generous wastage allowance is agreed at ordering, because sorting always sets some units aside.
  • The whole quantity is ordered in one go, since a later firing will not match what is already on the wall.
  • Joint width is agreed on a sample area rather than assumed from a spacer size.
  • Cutting is done wet and slowly, as the glaze chips readily at the cut line.
  • Time for setting out is priced into the programme, because this is slower work than fixing calibrated tile.

Commonly overlooked points

  • The tile is chosen from a photograph of a finished wall and then judged, on delivery, tile by tile.
  • Fixing takes considerably longer than calibrated tiling, and programmes rarely allow for that.
  • Ordering in two stages almost guarantees a visible change of tone partway across the panel.
  • Wider joints mean far more grout on show, so grout choice becomes a primary design decision.
  • Soft arrises make trims and terminations harder to resolve than they are with a pressed tile.
  • Trims and profiles ordered against a nominal thickness will not sit correctly on a tile whose thickness varies.
