Overview

What tile edge trim is

A tile edge trim is an extruded profile, usually in anodised or brushed aluminium, stainless steel, brass or rigid plastic, with two parts. A perforated or ribbed anchoring leg is bedded in the adhesive underneath the tile, and a visible face section stands at the tile edge. Face shapes range from a square section that sits flush, through quarter-round and bullnose forms, to sloped and stepped profiles used at changes of level.

It has a specific job that neither grout nor sealant performs. Grout fills the joints between tiles and sealant closes junctions where movement is expected; neither protects an exposed tile arris or establishes a straight, deliberate line where a tiled field stops. The trim does both, and it also sets the visual thickness of the tiled surface, which is why the same tiles can look crisp in one room and unresolved in another.

It should not be mistaken for a movement joint profile, which looks similar but contains a compressible or flexible insert and is placed where the tiled surface has to move. An edge trim is a protection and finishing component. Its critical constraint is timing: because the leg is buried in the adhesive bed, the profile has to be chosen and its depth matched to the tile plus the bed before the tiler begins. Adding one afterwards means taking tiles off.

Installation dependency
The anchoring leg is bedded in the adhesive as the tiling proceeds, so the profile is a tiling decision rather than a finishing one. Its depth is matched to the tile plus the bed, and getting that wrong shows as a proud or recessed edge.
Appearance
The trim reads as a continuous line at the edge of a tiled field, so its finish, colour and profile shape carry real visual weight. Corners, mitres and stops in the profile itself need setting out as carefully as the tiles.
Surface wear
The trim exists because tile arrises chip. It takes the impacts instead, which means the profile itself shows wear at thresholds and corners, and softer finishes mark before harder ones do.
Substrate dependency
The leg needs full adhesive contact to stay put, so the background behind the trim has to be sound and true. A hollow behind a trim usually announces itself when something knocks the edge.
Moisture behaviour
In a splashed or wet position, water reaches the back of the profile through the joint at its edge. What that means for a particular metal or coating is a matter for the maker's documentation, not an assumption from appearance.
Repairability
A damaged trim cannot usually be replaced without disturbing the tiles that hold its leg, so a knocked profile tends to stay knocked for the life of the tiling.

Ask for the maker's profile range and depths against the tile being used, its statement about the metal or coating in wet positions, and its own corner and stop details.

  • The background must be true where the trim runs, because the profile shows every deviation as a wavering line.

  • Where the trim meets a movement joint, the two details have to be resolved rather than overlapped.
  • Corners, ends and intersections between profiles need a decided treatment, since factory corner pieces are not always available.
  • At a threshold, the finished levels of both floor surfaces determine which profile geometry will work.
