Overview

What ceramic tile is

Ceramic tile is made from clay bodies pressed or extruded into shape, dried and then fired, usually at a lower temperature than porcelain. The fired body stays more open and more absorbent than a porcelain one, and it is normally finished with a glaze that provides the colour, the pattern and the working surface.

That difference in body is the practical distinction between the two. A more open body takes up more water, which is why ceramic is generally discussed for internal walls and lighter-duty internal floors, while porcelain is the family usually considered where wetting, freezing or heavy traffic are involved. Because the glaze carries all the colour, a chip exposes the paler body underneath quite plainly.

The softer body brings its own advantages. Ceramic is easier to cut and drill on site, lighter to handle on a wall, and produced in a very wide range of small formats, shaped trims and decorative glazed faces that are harder to find in denser porcelain bodies.

Moisture behaviour
Ceramic bodies are more open than porcelain and take up more moisture, which is the main reason the two are considered for different locations. What a particular tile may be used for is stated by its maker rather than by the material name.
Surface wear
The glaze is the working surface. Once it has been worn through or chipped, the paler body shows, and there is no way to restore it locally, so the tile is replaced rather than repaired.
Appearance
Glazes carry gloss, colour depth and small variations that are difficult to reproduce in denser bodies, which is why hand-finished, crackle and reactive glaze looks are so often ceramic rather than porcelain.
Installation dependency
The softer body cuts and drills more easily than porcelain, which matters on a wall full of pipework, switches and fixings, and it reduces the amount of specialist cutting equipment needed.
Substrate dependency
Wall tiling depends on its background. Plaster, boards and masonry all behave differently, and old, painted or friable surfaces need assessment before anything is bedded onto them.
Repairability
Individual tiles can often be cut out and replaced, but matching a glaze years later is uncertain, so keeping spares from the original batch is the practical safeguard against a mismatch.

  • Wet-area backgrounds normally involve a separate strategy for managing water that sits behind the tiling.
  • Corners, internal angles and junctions with baths and trays are usually formed in sealant rather than rigid grout.
  • A heavy area of wall tiling depends on the background's ability to carry it, which is a judgement for a professional.

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Gloss glazes show unevenness in the wall behind them far more than matt ones under raking light.
  • Handmade and hand-glazed tiles vary in size and face, and the layout has to allow for that variation.
  • Joint width and colour dominate the look of small-format tiling such as a brick-bond wall.
  • Trim and edge pieces determine how neatly a tiled area stops, and they are easy to forget when ordering.
  • Batch shade variation applies to ceramic just as it does to porcelain, so batches are worth confirming.

  • Will anything in this room strike or knock the tiled surface on a regular basis?
  • How visible would a chipped edge showing the pale body be in this particular position?
  • Is the glaze on this range described by its maker as intended for floors as well as walls?
  • How are the external corners protected, and what happens if one of them is knocked?

  • What does the maker advise for cleaning this particular glaze over the years?
  • Are spare tiles from the same batch being retained somewhere they will not be damaged?
  • How will discoloured joints be dealt with in a few years' time, and by whom?
  • Can the sealant lines be renewed without disturbing the tiling around them?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Setting out determines whether the cut tiles land in prominent positions or discreet ones.
  • Fixings taken through tiles for accessories need care if the glaze is not to crack.
  • Bedding and jointing products have to suit the tile, the background and the room, which is the installer's decision.
  • Where the tiling stops part-way up a wall, the edge detail has to be decided before work starts.

  • Ceramic and porcelain sold under one visual range are often different products with different bodies.
  • Tiling over old tiles changes the wall build-up and may affect how fittings and fixtures sit.
  • Small-format tiling takes considerably longer to lay than the same area in large tiles.
