Overview

What onyx stone is

Building onyx is not the banded chalcedony sold under that name in jewellery. It is a chemical sedimentary stone: layers of calcium carbonate precipitated from cool or warm mineral bearing water in caves and around springs, which is why it arrives in fine translucent bands and belongs to the same family as travertine rather than to the metamorphic stones.

It is offered as a marble alternative, and the distinction matters. Marble is metamorphic, a limestone recrystallised under heat and pressure into an interlocking mass. Onyx was never metamorphosed; it is a direct precipitate that kept its depositional banding. It is consequently softer, far more likely to contain open voids and healed fissures, and it is the only stone in this group normally chosen for light to pass through it rather than to fall on it.

That fragility shapes everything downstream. Slabs are commonly resin filled and mesh backed at the factory, and panels are frequently laminated to glass or to a lightweight honeycomb backing before they can be handled at all. As a carbonate it is dulled by acids exactly as marble is, and backlighting is unforgiving: it reveals every repair, void, resin fill and shift in colour.

  • On floors and other trafficked surfaces, where the softness and internal voids of the material work against it.
  • On worktops that meet acidic food and drink, since a carbonate stone will be dulled wherever those land.
  • Anywhere the panel could be knocked, leaned on or loaded, unless the backing and fixings have been designed for it.
  • In wet or shower construction, where the tanking and drainage design governs and belongs to a qualified professional.
  • Where the heat from a lighting installation behind the panel has not been considered by whoever designed the lighting.

Appearance
The banding is the whole point, and it looks entirely different in reflected light and in transmitted light. Any decision made from a slab standing in daylight at a yard should be checked with a light behind it.
Repairability
Voids and fissures are normal in this stone and are usually filled with resin at the factory. Those fills are nearly invisible in reflected light and often obvious the moment the panel is lit from behind.
Substrate dependency
Most onyx panels are only viable because something stiffens them: a mesh backing, a bonded glass sheet or a honeycomb panel. The backing choice determines how the panel can be fixed and how it must be handled.
Surface wear
It is a soft carbonate stone and marks accordingly. Even in a purely decorative position, cleaning routines and the way people touch the surface will change its appearance over time.
Maintenance
Acidic cleaners and many everyday liquids dull a calcite surface. What is used on an onyx panel should follow the supplier's guidance for that material rather than a general household routine.
Installation dependency
Fabrication, backing, lighting cavity and fixing all interact, so the panel build up is normally designed as an assembly rather than ordered as a stone and fixed like a tile.

  • Is the panel to be lit from behind, and who is designing the lighting cavity, the light source and its heat behaviour?
  • Will people touch, lean on or brush past the panel in normal use, and does the fixing allow for that?
  • Is the position exposed to splashing, cleaning chemicals or condensation from a nearby wet function?
  • Will direct daylight fall across the panel and compete with the backlighting effect at certain times of day?
  • Does the room see temperature swings that could act on a laminated build up of stone and backing?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The stiffening backing, whether mesh, glass or honeycomb, is part of the product rather than an optional extra.
  • A backlit panel needs a cavity, a light source and an even diffusion arrangement designed together with the stone.
  • Fixings must suit both the backing type and the wall construction, and are usually specified by the panel fabricator.
  • Heat from the lighting installation acts on the panel and its adhesives, which is a matter for the lighting designer.
  • Joints between panels are visible when lit, so their positions belong on the layout drawing from the start.

  • Book matching consecutive slabs produces the mirrored banding most people picture when they imagine this stone.
  • The colour seen in transmitted light can be startlingly different from the colour seen against a wall.
  • Resin fills, mesh lines and adhesive lines can all become visible once a light source is placed behind the panel.
  • Polished, honed and sandblasted finishes each change how much light scatters at the surface and how the banding reads.
  • Edges and returns show the layered structure directly, so mitres and edge details deserve deliberate attention.

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.

  • How extensive are the voids and fills in the actual reserved slabs, and have they been viewed with a light behind them?
  • What backing is proposed, and what does the fabricator say about handling the panel once it is made up?
  • Is the panel in a position where impact is realistically possible, and what happens if it is struck?
  • How will the panel be protected during the rest of the fit out, when other trades are still working nearby?
  • Service life in a decorative position depends on handling, cleaning and the lighting behind it rather than on the stone alone.

  • What cleaning does the supplier consider compatible with a soft carbonate stone in this position?
  • If a panel is damaged, can a matching slab be obtained, or was the original book matched pair unique to that block?
  • Who will maintain and replace the light source behind the panel, and is there access to do so?
  • Has any protective treatment been applied at the factory, and what does its documentation say about renewal?
  • How would a resin fill that becomes more visible over time be addressed, and by whom?

Installation

Installation dependencies

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Slab reservation and book matching precede everything, because the block determines what pattern is achievable.
  • The backing and laminating operation is a factory process with its own lead time within the project programme.
  • The lighting cavity, diffuser and fixings are set out before the panel arrives, not adjusted around it afterwards.
  • Handling on site requires more people and more care than an equivalent area of ordinary stone or tile.
  • Trial assembly with the light source running is the only reliable way to confirm the appearance before final fixing.

Ask for these in writing, for the specific product being proposed, and keep them with the project record.

  • Numbered photographs of the reserved slabs viewed both in reflected light and with a light behind them.
  • A description of the backing or laminating build up the fabricator proposes, and how the panel is to be fixed.
  • The fabricator's drawing showing panel sizes, joint positions, edge details and the lighting cavity behind.
  • Written guidance on cleaning and on any treatment applied to the face of the stone.

  • Has anyone viewed the actual slabs with a light behind them rather than only standing against a rack?
  • What backing is proposed, and how does that backing affect the way the panel is fixed to the wall?
  • Who is designing the lighting behind the panel, and how is heat from the light source being handled?
  • How will the panel joints fall, and how visible will they be once the installation is lit?
  • Is the block large enough to deliver the book matched pattern being drawn, and has that been confirmed?
  • What happens if a panel is damaged after installation, and is replacement material available from the same block?
  • Who is responsible for protecting the panel during the remainder of the fit out?
  • If the panel is near a wet function, who is designing the waterproofing and drainage behind and around it?

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • Building onyx and gemstone onyx are different materials entirely, which causes confusion at the very first conversation.
  • The stone is closer to travertine in origin than to marble, despite being sold alongside marble and priced with it.
  • Backlighting is not a finishing touch: it changes the appearance so completely that it must be designed from the outset.
  • Resin fills that are invisible in a showroom can become the most noticeable feature once the panel is lit.
  • Access to change a failed lamp behind a fixed stone panel is frequently forgotten until the lamp fails.
