Overview

What limestone is

Limestone is a sedimentary rock built up from calcium carbonate: shell fragments, coral debris, lime mud and precipitated carbonate laid down and consolidated over long periods. Fossils, shell beds and bedding planes are common within it, and they are part of the material rather than faults in a delivery.

As a carbonate, limestone shares marble's reaction to acids, and being sedimentary rather than recrystallised it is generally softer and more open in structure. Porosity varies enormously: some limestones are dense and fine grained, while others are markedly absorbent. That range is why one limestone can behave quite differently from another sold under the same general description.

Travertine is a limestone variety formed at springs, characterised by lines of voids left by escaping gas. Those voids are commonly filled at the factory with resin or a cement-based filler, and fillers can later work loose and leave open holes. Whether a travertine is filled or unfilled, and cross-cut or vein-cut, changes both its appearance and how the surface behaves in use.

Moisture behaviour
Porosity is the defining variable in this stone. Open limestones take up water, oils and coloured liquids readily, and even dense ones are usually given some surface treatment. What is appropriate depends entirely on the specific stone.
Surface wear
Softer than marble and much softer than granite, limestone scuffs and wears where traffic concentrates, and the sharp arrises on steps and nosings round over noticeably with use.
Weathering and exposure
Outdoors, carbonate stone reacts to acidic rainfall and can develop a weathered, textured face. Open-structured stone and travertine are also tested hardest by repeated freezing conditions.
Appearance
Fossil traces, shell beds and colour banding are inherent, and the void pattern is travertine's signature. The same block reads very differently depending on whether it is cross-cut or vein-cut.
Repairability
Filled voids in travertine can be refilled by a specialist, and worn limestone can often be honed back, so damage in this stone is frequently repairable rather than terminal.
Maintenance
Because it is both porous and acid-reactive, limestone attracts more attention than a dense silicate stone. Products and frequency are matters for the supplier's guidance on that particular stone.
Substrate dependency
A rigid stone floor still depends on a stiff, flat and dry base, and a softer stone shows any lippage between units in the way the surface wears along the walking lines.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • Bedding materials can stain a pale, porous stone from behind, which affects what is used.
  • Floor stiffness governs whether joints stay intact beneath a rigid stone surface.
  • Externally, the sub-base, the falls and the drainage determine how long the surface stays sound.
  • Some limestones are affected by moisture rising from the base, which is a design matter for others.
  • Perimeter details and movement provision apply here as they do to other rigid surfacing.

  • Honed, brushed, tumbled and antiqued finishes suit this material better than a high polish.
  • Cross-cut and vein-cut travertine produce completely different figures from the same block.

  • What surface treatment does the supplier advise for this stone in this room?
  • How will oil and food marks be dealt with if they appear on the surface?
  • Who would refill travertine voids if that becomes necessary in future?
  • Are spare tiles from the same batch being retained for later repairs?
  • How will an area that has worn or darkened unevenly be brought back to a consistent look?

Installation

Installation dependencies

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Dry-laying to blend colour and fossil variation across the floor is normal practice.
  • The order in which any surface treatment and the grouting happen is a decision for the installer.
  • Protection through the rest of the build matters, because the stone marks and stains easily.
  • Cutting produces dust and slurry that can stain a porous stone if it is not managed.
  • Setting out determines where the cuts fall relative to fossil beds and colour bands.

  • A surface treatment reduces absorption but does not make a carbonate stone acid-proof.
  • Fossils and bedding lines are natural features and are not grounds for rejecting a delivery.
  • Two stones sold under the same name can differ markedly in porosity and in hardness.
