What marble is
Marble is limestone that has been recrystallised by heat and pressure. The original carbonate grains regrow into an interlocking crystalline mass, and impurities from the parent rock migrate into the streaks and swirls that read as veining. It is a metamorphic rock, and the veining is a record of that process rather than a pattern applied to a surface.
Two consequences follow from its carbonate chemistry. Marble reacts with acids: lemon juice, vinegar, wine and many household cleaning products dissolve a little of the surface and leave a dulled mark known as etching. Etching is a chemical change in the stone rather than dirt, so it cannot be cleaned away and is dealt with by refinishing. Marble is also softer than granite, so it scratches and burnishes more readily wherever use concentrates.
Marble is quarried worldwide and sold under many names describing colour and vein character. It comes as sawn slabs and as calibrated tiles, finished polished, honed, brushed or tumbled. A honed surface shows etching far less obviously than a polished one, which is why the choice of finish matters as much as the choice of stone.
