Film-faced Formwork Plywood
Treats the formwork panel as a material in its own right, because the face it presents becomes the visible surface of the concrete and nothing about general-purpose plywood describes that.

Overview
What film-faced plywood is
Film-faced formwork plywood is a plywood panel carrying a resin film — usually phenolic, sometimes melamine — bonded to one or both faces under heat and pressure, with the edges sealed against water. Underneath the film it is plywood: cross-bonded veneers with the grain of each layer running across the last, and it inherits everything that follows from that construction. What the film adds is a hard, closed, non-absorbent surface that concrete will release from, and a face that survives being struck and used again.
The essential point about the panel is that the face is the mould. Concrete takes its shape from the formwork and records the surface it was cast against, so the film, the panel joints, the tie positions, any nail holes and any damage to the face all print into the concrete as a permanent record. A smooth film gives a smooth as-struck finish; a textured or timber-faced form gives a board-marked one. Whether the concrete surface will be seen, and what it should look like, is therefore a decision about this panel as much as about the concrete.
The face is also a consumable. Each strike takes something out of it, releasing agents and cleaning act on it, and every hole drilled for a tie and every cut through the panel opens the sealed edge and lets water into the plywood core. How many uses a panel gives before its face is no longer good enough for visible work is a question about that panel and how it is handled — and a panel that is finished for visible concrete is often still perfectly serviceable where nothing will be seen.
One boundary has to be explicit. Formwork as an assembly — how it is propped, tied, braced, loaded and struck, and when — is temporary works, designed by a temporary works engineer, and it is not what this entry covers. The panel is a sheet material bought by the sheet. Everything about how it is put together, and what pressures it is asked to resist, belongs to a designed system and to people qualified to design it.

- Appearance
- The face of the panel becomes the face of the concrete. Panel size and layout, joint lines, tie holes, patching and damage all print through, so the setting-out of the panels is a visual decision.
- Surface wear
- Each strike, each clean and each drilled hole wears the film. Panels are effectively graded by use as they age, moving from visible work to hidden work rather than being thrown away.
- Moisture behaviour
- The film and the sealed edges keep water out of the plywood core. Cutting or drilling opens that seal, and an unsealed edge is where a panel starts to fail.
- Substrate dependency
- Beneath the film it is cross-bonded plywood, so its stiffness, its behaviour across and along the panel, and its edge condition are plywood properties.
- Installation dependency
- Release agents, cleaning between pours and how panels are stacked and stored between uses all act on the face, and all show up in the next surface cast against it.
- Repairability
- Patching a damaged face is possible but the patch prints into the concrete, which is why repaired panels are moved to positions where nothing will be seen.
- Documentation
- The manufacturer's information for the panel, and whatever record exists of how many times it has been used, are what a decision about a visible pour actually rests on.

- Everything holding the panels — soldiers, walings, ties, props and bracing — is temporary works designed by others.
- Tie positions, kickers and stop ends determine where holes and joints will appear in the concrete face.
- The concrete mix and the placing and compaction of it decide as much about the finished surface as the panel does.
- Panel layout is set out on drawings when the concrete will be seen, and is not left to site convenience.
- Where a lining or a textured face is used over the panel, it becomes the mould surface instead.
