Overview
What flame-retardant treated timber is
Flame-retardant treated timber is timber, or a wood-based panel, that has been through a treatment concerned with fire. It is distinct from preservative treatment, which addresses biological attack and is explicitly not a fire treatment, and it is distinct from modification, which changes the wood substance itself. Here the wood is unchanged in kind and carries something it did not carry before, or wears something it did not wear before.
There are two routes and they are different products, not two ways of buying the same one. In the impregnation route the timber is placed in a vessel and the treatment is carried into the wood, commonly using vacuum and pressure, after which the timber is re-dried — a stage that matters, because the wood has been wetted and has to come back to a workable condition before it is machined or installed. In the coating route a product is applied to the surface of timber that is otherwise untreated, which means it is a film that can be damaged, abraded, weathered, painted over or simply missed in places.
That difference decides most of the practical questions. An impregnated timber can be cut to length and the cut face is still treated material, though the provider may still have requirements about cutting, planing and re-treating. A coated timber loses its coating wherever the surface is cut, sanded or damaged, and any later decoration sits on top of a product whose behaviour depends on what is over it. Whether a treated timber can be used outside, or where it may be wetted, is a property of the specific system: some are intended for interior conditions only, and treatments differ in how they behave when water moves through the wood.
This entry deliberately makes no claim about performance, and the reason is structural rather than cautious. What happens in a fire is a property of a tested assembly and of the project's fire strategy — the construction as a whole, its linings, cavities, junctions and openings — and never of a single piece of timber considered on its own. - Any subsequent coating, stain or paint sits on the treated material and is part of what has been specified.
- Cavity barriers, linings and the detailing around penetrations are separate matters designed by others.
- Where treated and untreated timber meet in one construction, the design has to be explicit about which is where.
Appearance

- Treatment can alter the colour or the surface texture of timber, so samples should be of treated material.
- How a finish takes on treated timber can differ from the untreated species, which affects trial panels.
