Ceiling Bulkhead

Overview

What a bulkhead is

A ceiling bulkhead is a section of ceiling brought down below the plane around it and formed as a framed and lined enclosure with a soffit and one or more returns. It exists because something will not fit within the depth the rest of the ceiling has: a duct, a beam, a drainage run, a rooflight kerb, a step in the structure above.

Its significance is that it converts a coordination problem into an architectural one. Once a bulkhead exists it sets head height locally, it decides where ceiling-mounted items can and cannot go, and its returns become long edges close to eye level that every adjoining finish has to resolve against.

  • It is not a coffer. A coffer is set back above the ceiling plane and is commonly there to be seen; a bulkhead drops below the plane and commonly exists to hide something.
  • It is not a ceiling void. The void is the concealed space above the ceiling; a bulkhead is built construction that encloses part of that space and brings its underside down into the room.
  • It is not a beam. A beam is a structural member spanning between supports; a bulkhead is a lining that may be built around a beam and that carries nothing except itself.

The returns of a bulkhead are long straight lines close to eye level, and deviation in them is far more visible than the same deviation in a flat ceiling.

  • That a bulkhead is a design decision taken on its own. It is most often the visible consequence of a coordination decision taken in the ceiling void.
  • That a bulkhead can be moved once the services are installed. The bulkhead follows what it conceals, so moving it usually means moving a service run first.
