Overview
What calcium silicate board is
Calcium silicate board is a mineral sheet made by mixing a lime source, a fine silica source such as ground quartz, and a reinforcing fibre into a slurry, forming that slurry into sheets, and then curing them under steam pressure in an autoclave. Heat and pressure convert the mix into calcium silicate hydrate, which is the binder holding the finished board together.
Because the binder forms throughout the sheet, the board is homogeneous. There is no paper liner and no separate face, so both sides behave the same way, edges can be worked, and the board can be cut, drilled and profiled without a facing to tear. It is comparatively low in density for a mineral board, which is why it feels lighter in the hand than a cement-bound sheet of similar size.
The sibling it is most often mistaken for is fibre cement board, which is bound with Portland cement rather than by autoclaved calcium silicate hydrate. Fibre cement is denser, harder on tools and is the product used outside as a weatherboard. Calcium silicate board is an interior board, more workable and more tolerant of humid air, and it is not a substitute for an external sheet.

- As a lining substrate the board is paperless and homogeneous, so both faces behave alike and cut edges stay sound. What it is fixed to still governs how it performs once in place.
- Moisture behaviour
- The board tolerates humid interior air better than a paper-faced sheet, but tolerance of humidity is not the same thing as suitability for wetting, which is an assembly question for others.
- Installation dependency
- It cuts, drills and profiles cleanly, which is a real site advantage, but it generates mineral dust and needs its own jointing method rather than plasterboard practice.
- Surface wear
- Low density makes the board comparatively easy to dent and chip in handling and in use, so impact-prone positions deserve either protection or a denser board altogether.
- Appearance
- The face is a matt off-white mineral surface with an open texture. Decoration depends on priming and preparation as set out in the manufacturer's documentation.
