Coffer
Explains the coffer as a recess defined by what surrounds it, distinct both from a ceiling that has been dropped elsewhere and from the mouldings used to trim one.

Overview
What a coffer is
A coffer is a panel of ceiling set back from the plane around it and bounded on every side by the ribs, beams or margins that form the recess. What makes it a coffer rather than simply a higher patch of ceiling is that the recess is read against a surrounding plane that continues past it, and is commonly one of a repeating set.
It matters because it exists in two quite different lineages that look alike from below. Coffering began as a structural economy — material removed from a slab between ribs leaves the ribs spanning and the panels carrying almost nothing — and it survives as a lining device that gives a flat ceiling depth and rhythm. In either case the ceiling stops being one plane, and lighting, services, access and setting-out all have to negotiate the result.

- It is not a ceiling bulkhead. A bulkhead drops below the ceiling plane and commonly exists to conceal something; a coffer is set back above the plane and is commonly there to be seen.
- It is not a ceiling void. The void is the concealed space between the ceiling and the structure above it; a coffer is a visible recess formed in the ceiling surface, and the void continues above both the coffer and the ribs around it.
- It is not a fibrous plaster moulding. Fibrous plaster mouldings are a published material entry used to form and enrich the ribs and margins of a coffer; the coffer is the recess those pieces describe.

A coffered ceiling is a set of internal corners, returns and stopped ends rather than one flat plane, and the framing, boarding and jointing follow from that.
Because the arrangement reads as a repeating grid, small variations between one panel and the next are far more visible than the same variation in a flat ceiling.
A recess is commonly the last place an access hatch is wanted, so whatever sits above a coffer may be harder to reach than the rest of the ceiling plane.
A coffered surface is not flat, and shaping a ceiling changes how sound is reflected within a room; whether that is wanted is a matter for acoustic design rather than a general rule.

Commonly misunderstood
- That a coffer is always decorative. In a coffered or waffle slab the recesses are what is left after material was deliberately taken out from between the ribs that carry the floor above.
- That a coffer pattern can be set out once the services are in. The ribs occupy the depth the services would otherwise use, so the two are commonly settled together and early.
