Glass reinforced gypsum is a casting material in which gypsum plaster forms the matrix and glass fibre provides the reinforcement. The fibre may be sprayed with the slurry into a mould or laid in as a mat and wetted out, and the mould can be almost any shape, so the process yields thin, relatively strong shells rather than solid sections.
Because the reinforcement is glass fibre distributed through the shell rather than hessian and timber laid into the back, the castings can be thinner and more consistent than traditional fibrous work, and they can be made to complex curved and compound geometry. Fixing lugs, returns and edge details are usually formed as part of the casting rather than added to it afterwards.
The material it is most often confused with is glassfibre reinforced concrete, which uses a cement matrix and is made for external use. The two are described in almost the same words and are entirely different in what they will tolerate. Gypsum is a soluble mineral, so glass reinforced gypsum is an interior material and is not an alternative to a cement-based product outdoors.

- Because the name so closely resembles a cement-based external product, the maker's documentation is the only reliable confirmation of what has actually been supplied.
