Ramp Flight

Overview

What a ramp flight is

A ramp flight is a continuous inclined surface joining two levels. Unlike a stair, it has no repeated rhythm of step and no discrete elements to set out: it is one unbroken plane, and anything crossing it — a wheel, a trolley, a foot — is in continuous contact with it the whole way.

That continuity is what makes it a distinct position rather than a sloping piece of floor. The surface is walked and wheeled on at an incline, so how it behaves underfoot is a different question from how the same surface behaves laid level; water runs along it rather than sitting on it; and its two ends are junctions between a slope and a level surface, which are the points where the transition is felt and where the construction is most often resolved badly.

  • It is not a stair flight. A stair changes level in discrete steps, each set out from the last, and is described through treads, risers and the members carrying them; a ramp flight has none of those positions and is instead one continuous plane whose steepness is constant along its length.
  • It is not a stair landing. A landing is level by definition and exists to interrupt a change of height; a ramp flight is inclined by definition and exists to make that change without interruption. A ramp route commonly contains both, which is why they are separate positions.
  • It is not a door threshold. A threshold is the narrow junction at a doorway where inside meets outside and where weathering, drainage and level are resolved in a short distance; a ramp flight is the approach that arrives at that junction, and the two commonly meet without being the same thing.

An external ramp is exposed along its whole length and its lowest point is where water, silt and debris collect, which is also where the route reaches a building.

Durability

Wear on a ramp is concentrated by the direction of travel rather than spread across the surface, and the transitions at each end take more of it than the middle.

Movement

A ramp joining a structure to external ground crosses a boundary between two things that move differently, and that boundary has to be allowed for rather than simply covered over.

Commonly misunderstood

  • That a ramp is a stair without the steps. It is a different position with different governing issues: continuity of surface, drainage along the slope and the transitions at each end, none of which arise in the same way on a stair.
  • That the same surface behaves the same way laid level and laid to a slope. How a surface performs underfoot, how water moves across it and how it wears all change with inclination.
