Overview
What open mesh grating is
Open mesh floor grating is a walking deck made as an open grid rather than as a covering laid on something else. Steel gratings are built from parallel load bars locked to transverse bars or twisted rods, either welded, press-locked or riveted together, and are usually galvanised after fabrication. Moulded and pultruded glass reinforced polymer gratings offer the same open geometry in a non-metallic material.
The contrast with chequer plate is openness. Plate is a solid sheet, so water, light and debris stay on it; grating passes all three through, which is why it appears over drainage channels, on external walkways and wherever daylight or ventilation needs to reach the level below. That openness has consequences in both directions: what falls through lands on whatever is underneath, and what is below can be seen from above.
Grating is ordered rather than cut to suit. Panels are made to a bar depth and spacing chosen for the span between supports, banded at cut edges, and held down with proprietary clips or bolts so that a panel cannot lift. Aperture size decides what can pass through the deck, from rainwater and grit to dropped tools, and it is one of the first things a designer settles. Span, loading and the support layout are engineering matters for the professional team.

- Installation dependency
- Panels are made to suit the support layout and then clipped or bolted so they cannot lift. Cut openings need banding at the edges, and cutting on site without banding leaves an edge the grating was never made to have.
- Substrate dependency
- Grating spans between supports rather than resting on a base, so the supporting steelwork or kerb is the real substrate. Bearing length and the flatness of those supports decide whether panels sit evenly or rock.
- Weathering and exposure
- External gratings are commonly galvanised, and the coating at cut and drilled edges is where attention is needed. Polymer gratings avoid corrosion but respond to prolonged sunlight in their own way, which the manufacturer describes.
- Maintenance
- Debris collects in the apertures and in the channel beneath rather than on the surface, so what is below has to be reachable for clearing. A blocked deck stops doing the one thing it was chosen for.
- Appearance
- The deck reads as a directional grid and the bar direction is visible from any distance. Views through it, and views up through it from below, are part of the design rather than an incidental effect.
- Acoustic behaviour
- An open steel deck sounds quite unlike a solid floor when walked on, and that difference belongs to the whole supported assembly rather than to the panel alone.

- Is the atmosphere corrosive, coastal or chemically loaded in any way?
- What falls onto this deck, and where does it end up once it passes through?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Panels span between supports, so the supporting structure is designed before the deck is ordered.
- Bearing length at each end is a manufacturer's requirement rather than a matter of judgement on site.
- Fixing clips or bolts hold panels down, and their type follows the support arrangement.
- Cut openings for pipes or posts are banded, which is a fabrication operation rather than a site one.
- Where an infill or solid section is needed in part of the run, that changes the drainage below.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Bar direction is strongly visible and is set out deliberately rather than left to the fabricator.
- Galvanised finishes weather to a duller grey, and that change is normal rather than a defect.
- The deck is partly transparent, so what sits beneath it becomes part of what is seen.
- Polymer gratings are available in a range of colours, which reads very differently from galvanised steel.
- Panel joints and clip positions are visible on a large deck and repay some setting out.
