Overview
What precast concrete paving is
Precast concrete paving covers the factory-made units laid on a prepared base to surface patios, paths, drives and terraces: flags and slabs in the larger formats, blocks and setts in the smaller ones. Because the units are made under cover in moulds, dimensions and finish are more consistent than anything cast in place, and a wide range of surfaces can be produced.
Production divides broadly into wet-cast and pressed units. Wet-cast paving uses a wetter mix poured into moulds, which takes fine texture well and is often used for riven, patterned and reproduction stone appearances. Pressed units are made from a drier mix compacted under pressure, giving a denser and more uniform product with squarer arrises and closer dimensional consistency.
The unit is rarely what determines how paving performs. Sub-base preparation and compaction, the bedding layer, the falls to drainage, edge restraint and the jointing all sit beneath or around the paving, and problems that look like slab failures - rocking, settlement, lifting, weeds through the joints - usually trace back to one of them rather than to the units.

- Substrate dependency
- What sits beneath the paving decides almost everything: the sub-base material and its compaction, the bedding layer, and how the ground beneath was prepared. Rocking, settlement and lifting are base problems that simply show up at the surface.
- Weathering and exposure
- Outdoor concrete weathers. Surfaces lighten, pigments soften, organic growth appears where shade and damp persist, and early efflorescence often shows as a pale bloom that generally fades with time and rainfall.
- Surface wear
- Texture underfoot changes with wear, with the finish chosen, and with whether the surface stays damp or shaded. Slip behaviour varies by finish, by wetness and by what has grown on the surface, and is a question for the manufacturer's data.
- Appearance
- Colour varies between production batches, which is why units are usually laid from several packs at once rather than one pack at a time. Pigmented surfaces mellow, and the laid appearance differs from a dry sample in a yard.
- Maintenance
- Upkeep centres on sweeping, clearing joints, keeping drainage outlets free and dealing with organic growth. Cleaning methods that suit one finish can damage another, particularly pressure washing on textured or wet-cast surfaces.
- Repairability
- Individual units can usually be lifted and reset, which is one of the practical advantages of a modular surface. Whether a replacement matches depends on batch, on weathering, and on whether the range is still produced.
- Moisture behaviour
- Water has to go somewhere. Falls, drainage channels, permeable joints and the route away from the building are all design decisions, and paving laid flat or falling the wrong way creates problems no unit can solve.
- Installation dependency
- Excavation depth, sub-base compaction in layers, bedding type, jointing method and edge restraint make up the actual job. The paving units themselves are the last and often the least influential part of it.
Exposure
Exposure and environmental conditions
- How much of the area is shaded or damp for long periods, where organic growth tends to appear?
- Does the site freeze regularly, and is de-icing salt likely to be used on the surface?
- Where does surface water go once it has left the paved surface, and is that route designed?
- Do trees overhang the area, dropping leaves, sap or fruit onto the paving below?
- Will vehicles use the surface, and if so what kind of vehicles and how often?

Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- What ground lies beneath, and whether it has been investigated before excavation depth is set.
- How the sub-base is built up and compacted, which is the part nobody ever sees afterwards.
- What bedding layer is proposed, and whether it suits both the units and the traffic.
- How edge restraint is provided, since unrestrained paving spreads and the joints open up.
- How the paving relates to the building, thresholds, drainage outlets and existing levels.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Wet-cast and pressed units read differently: one favours texture and riven faces, the other crisp arrises.
- Laying pattern, the mix of unit sizes and the joint width change the character as much as colour does.
- Colour shifts between batches, so mixing packs during laying evens out the finished result.
- Early efflorescence can make new paving look patchy before the surface settles down.
- Cut units at edges and around obstacles are conspicuous, so setting out deserves thought.

- Excavation to a depth suited to the ground conditions and to the intended use of the area.
- Sub-base laid and compacted in layers, which is where most of the durability is won or lost.
- A bedding layer chosen to suit the units, the traffic and the drainage strategy together.
- Falls set so that water runs away from the building and towards a designed outlet.
- Edge restraints installed before or alongside laying, so that the field cannot spread.
- Jointing carried out in suitable conditions, since many jointing materials are weather-sensitive.

- Most paving problems are base problems, and the units tend to get blamed for them.
- Edge restraint is what stops a field of paving from spreading and opening at the joints.
- Paving laid too high against a wall can bridge the damp-proof course in that wall.
- Efflorescence on new paving is common and usually fades, but it alarms people who were not warned.
- Colour batches change, so a repair made years later rarely matches the surrounding surface.
