Temporary Works: The Structure That Holds the Structure Up

Every construction project builds two structures. One is the building, and it appears on the drawings, in the contract and in the handover information. The other holds things up while the first one is incomplete, exists for weeks or months, and then disappears entirely, taking its drawings with it if nobody asked for them.

The published entity records point at it repeatedly without being able to develop it. The masonry entry asks what temporary support is required, who designs it, and at what point it can be removed. The permanent structure is not complete until it is complete

A building is only a structure once every part of it is doing its job. A steel frame is not a complete structure until its floors are on, because the floor plates are what collect horizontal force and take it back to the bracing.
