Overview

What glass tile is

Glass tile is made by casting, pressing or fusing glass into units, sometimes from recycled cullet. Colour either sits in the melt itself, so the whole tile is tinted, or is applied as a coating to the back face so that it is seen through clear glass from the front. Units arrive loose, mounted in sheets on mesh or paper, or as larger individual field tiles.

It is regularly confused with mosaic tile, but the two words describe different things. Mosaic is a format: small units held on a backing sheet for handling, and those units can be porcelain, stone, ceramic or glass. Glass tile is a material designation, and a glass tile can perfectly well be a large single format. Treating the two as the same leads to guidance about sheet layout and mesh being applied where the real questions come from the glass itself.

Those questions follow from two properties. The body is translucent, so whatever sits behind it is visible through the face: adhesive colour, trowel marks, notch lines, board joints and fixings can all read through a finished panel, which is why the bedding is treated as part of the visible finish. And the body does not absorb water in the way a fired clay body does, which changes how it bonds, how it is cut and finished at edges, and how it responds to heat and direct sunlight. The maker's documentation for the specific product governs all of it.

  • Where back-coated products are proposed with adhesives that have not been confirmed as compatible with the coating.

Properties

Key properties to discuss

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.

Appearance
Because the tile transmits light, the finished panel is the tile plus everything behind it. Adhesive colour, coverage and trowel direction all show through, and a change of adhesive partway across a wall is visible in the finished surface.
Substrate dependency
The background has to be flat, sound and consistent in colour and absorbency. Board joints, patch repairs and different backing materials behind one panel can read through the glass even when the tiling itself is faultless.
Installation dependency
Full and even bedding matters more than with an opaque tile, both for appearance and because voids behind a hard, non-absorbent unit are visible as well as structurally unhelpful. Sheet-mounted units also need the mounting method understood before fixing.
Moisture behaviour
The glass body itself does not take up water in the way a fired clay body does, so bonding depends on the adhesive and the preparation rather than on suction. Whether the surrounding construction handles water is a separate question about the whole assembly.
Surface wear
The face is hard but the arrises are brittle, so chipping at edges and at cut lines is the usual damage. Back-coated tiles depend on that rear coating staying intact, and damage to it shows through the face permanently.
Thermal behaviour
Glass responds to temperature change differently from a fired clay body, so a run in strong sunlight or close to a heat source is a different proposition from the same tile in a shaded interior. The maker's statement on heat and sunlight is the only reliable guide.
Documentation
Ask for the maker's fixing instructions, its position on adhesive colour and type, its statement about back coatings, and any limitation it places on where the product is offered for use.

Exposure

Exposure and environmental conditions

  • How much direct sunlight will fall on this panel through the day and across the seasons?
  • Is there a heat source such as a hob or an appliance close enough to warm part of the surface?
  • How much water and steam reaches the area, and what is behind the tile to deal with it?
  • Will cleaning products used nearby, such as oven or limescale treatments, ever reach this surface?
  • Is any part of the run in an unheated space where temperature swings widely?

Assembly

Substrate and system dependencies

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The background needs uniform colour and absorbency, since variation behind translucent tile becomes variation in front of it.
  • Adhesive colour is a design decision here, not a trade preference, because it is part of what is seen.
  • Board and sheet joints in the background should be resolved before tiling, as they can telegraph through.
  • Movement provision at perimeters and internal corners is designed by the installer for the specific panel.
  • Any waterproofing behind the tile is a separate system with its own compatibility requirements.

Appearance

Appearance and finish considerations

  • Colour reads differently by transmitted and reflected light, so samples should be viewed on the wall they will occupy.
  • Grout colour affects the perceived colour of the tile strongly, because the joint is seen through the tile edges.
  • Cut edges are visible in a way that cut ceramic edges are not, so cuts are planned to fall behind trims or into corners.
  • Sheet-mounted units can show the grid of the sheet if joints between sheets are not adjusted during fixing.
  • The reflective surface picks up every irregularity in the plane of the wall behind it.

  • What will strike or scrape this surface in normal use, and how exposed are the arrises?
  • If a back coating is part of the product, what protects it during and after installation?
  • How does the maker describe the product's behaviour against household cleaning chemicals?
  • Can a single damaged unit be removed and replaced without disturbing the sheet around it?
  • Are spares from the same batch being retained, given that colour runs vary?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What cleaning products does the maker accept, and which does it warn against for coated products?
  • How will limescale be dealt with in areas that get splashed regularly?
  • Will the grout in the joints discolour differently from the tile, and how is that managed?
  • If a repair is needed, who will carry it out and how will the bedding be matched?

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • The adhesive is selected for colour as well as for performance, and the choice is made before work starts.
  • Full bedding is planned, because voids and ridges behind the tile are visible through the face.
  • Cutting method differs from ceramic practice, and edge finishing is agreed before the first cut.
  • Sheet-mounted units need their mounting understood, since face-mounted and mesh-backed products are handled differently.
  • Setting out establishes where cuts fall so that visible cut arrises are minimised.
  • Protection of a finished glass panel during following trades is planned in, as chipping is difficult to make good.

Commonly overlooked points

  • The adhesive is treated as a hidden trade material when it is actually part of the visible finish.
  • A sample seen flat on a table gives no idea of how the tile will read as light passes through it on a wall.
  • Mosaic sheet layout gets all the attention while the properties of the glass itself go undiscussed.
  • Chipped arrises from cutting are usually the first defect noticed on a finished glass panel.
  • Colour runs vary between production batches, so ordering in stages risks a visible change.
