What radiation shielding board is
A radiation shielding lining board is a manufactured composite. In the most familiar form a continuous sheet of lead foil is bonded to the back of a gypsum board in the factory; in another, the gypsum core itself is loaded with barium compounds. Either way it arrives as a board that looks like an ordinary lining on its face, and it is jointed, finished and decorated much as any lining would be.
It is neither of the two things with which it is most often confused. It is not plain plasterboard, because a shielding layer is bonded into it and its weight and handling reflect that throughout. Nor is it the sheet lead covered elsewhere in the library, which is a malleable roll material used for flashings, weatherings and roofwork - that is a building-envelope product, and a shielded lining cannot be improvised from it on site.
The defining characteristic is continuity. A shielding layer only does its job where it is unbroken, so the system is not the board alone but the board together with its matching accessories: backing strips behind every joint, battens or studs faced in the same material, and discs or washers set over every screw head before the joint is filled. Every penetration - a socket, a conduit, a door frame, a viewing window - has a detail of its own. What is required in any room is determined by a qualified specialist, never by a materials reference.

- The specialist's written determination, the manufacturer's system details and a record of what was installed where are the documents that matter, and they follow the room for the whole of its life.
- Repairability
- Any later alteration - a new socket, a bracket, a screen fixed to the wall - breaks the layer and has to be made good to the same system, which is precisely why the as-built record is essential.
- Maintenance
- The face is decorated and maintained like any other lining, but nothing may be drilled, chased or cut into it without going back to the specialist who determined the room.
- Moisture behaviour
- The gypsum core behaves like any gypsum board in contact with water, so leaks, damp backgrounds and wet trades are treated with the same caution as for a standard lining.
- Appearance
- Once jointed and decorated the wall is indistinguishable from any other lining, which is exactly the problem when somebody later wants to hang something on it.

- Every service penetration, socket box and conduit route is designed rather than improvised on site.

- Once jointed and decorated the lining looks entirely ordinary, which is why it must be recorded and marked.
