Overview
What jointing compound is
Jointing compound is a paste or powder-based filler used together with a reinforcing tape to close the joints between plasterboards and to cover the heads of the fixings. It is worked into the tapered edges of the boards and then spread wider than the joint so the build-up feathers away to nothing. Only the joints, the internal angles, the fixings and any damage receive material; the paper face of the board is left as the finished surface.
Different compounds exist for different stages of the same operation, some formulated to bed the tape and fill the joint and others formulated to be rubbed down more easily on the final pass. Tapes vary as well, from plain paper to glass fibre mesh and to metal-reinforced or paper-faced angle tapes at corners. What they share is that they are a jointing system, matched to a board with tapered edges.
This is what separates the material from the gypsum plaster entry. A skim coat is a wet plaster applied over the entire board face to give one continuous monolithic surface, and it is a plasterer's operation. Taped and jointed work leaves two different materials side by side across the wall, board paper and hardened compound, which take paint and reflect light differently. Neither is better than the other, but they set very different expectations for flatness, decoration and later repair.

- Appearance
- A taped-and-jointed wall is two materials side by side, board paper and hardened compound, with different absorbency and different light response. That is why the sealing coat before decoration is part of the finish rather than an optional extra.
- Substrate dependency
- The system depends on tapered board edges meeting as the board manufacturer intends, on a frame that is genuinely in plane, and on fixing heads set to the right depth. None of those can be corrected by more compound.
- Installation dependency
- The visible quality comes from feathering and from rubbing down under good light. Ready-mixed compounds harden as their water leaves, while powder setting compounds harden by hydration of the gypsum binder, so the two behave differently between passes. This entry deliberately gives no method, because that belongs to the manufacturer's documentation and to the trade.
- Repairability
- Local damage can be cut out, re-taped and filled, and this is one of the more forgiving finishes to patch. Whether the patch disappears depends on matching the original finish level and on how the wall is lit.

- Hairline cracking at joints and internal angles during the first heating season is a common conversation, and who is responsible for it is better agreed at the outset than argued about afterwards.
- Moisture behaviour
- Hardened compound is a filler rather than a protective layer, so anywhere the surface may be wetted the protection has to come from the wider design set by a qualified professional.
- Documentation
- Record the agreed finish level, the compound and tape used together, and who is carrying out the sealing step. All three are routinely left unstated and all three shape what the owner actually receives.

- How will this wall be lit once it is finished, and will any light graze along the surface?
- Will the space be heated and ventilated normally while the finish is being completed and decorated?
- Is the room subject to steam or frequent wetting that would change what should protect the surface?
- Is the building still drying out from other wet work, and how would that affect the compound being used here?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The joint only performs as intended where board edges are tapered and meet in the way the board manufacturer expects.
- Framing accuracy governs the result, because a filled joint cannot correct a frame that is out of plane.
- Board fixing pattern and the setting of the fixing heads determine how visible those fixings are after decoration.
- Internal angles behave differently from flat joints because they concentrate movement between two planes.
- Cut edges have no taper, so a butt joint is a different condition from a factory edge and is treated as one.

- Has the surface been sealed before decoration, or is the paint being asked to do that sealing itself?

- Can a damaged area be cut out and re-taped locally, and will the patch be visible after decoration?
- Is the original finish level recorded anywhere, so that repairs match it rather than improve on it?
