Overview
What foil wrapped door is
The core of a foil wrapped door is a wood fibre panel, machined on a router so that any raised or recessed profile is cut into the board itself rather than assembled from separate rails and stiles. The face is then applied as a thin thermoplastic film, drawn down over the shaped board under heat and vacuum with an adhesive layer between the two so that it follows every moulded curve.
That continuous skin is what separates a wrapped door from a melamine faced board. On a faced flat panel the decor is an impregnated paper fused to a flat surface, and the exposed cut edge has to be covered separately by an applied band. On a wrapped door the profiled sides carry no separate edge treatment, because the same film simply continues around them and returns onto the back.
The consequence appears in service. Because the film is held by an adhesive rather than fused into the surface, sustained heat and steam tend to soften that bond and lift the skin, usually starting at a corner, an edge or the line where the wrap turns onto the reverse. The back face is normally a separate backing sheet, so a wrapped door is not symmetrical and cannot be treated as reversible.
