Melamine Faced Board for Cabinet Carcasses

Overview

What melamine faced board is

Melamine faced board is a wood-based panel that leaves the factory already decorated. A decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin is laid on each face of a core board, usually particleboard, and pressed with heat until the resin cures and fuses into the board surface. The facing is not a separate sheet stuck on afterwards; it becomes part of the panel and cannot be peeled back.

That is the distinction from the unfaced chipboard and medium-density fibreboard covered elsewhere in this library, which are bare substrates supplied to be finished later. Melamine faced board arrives finished on both faces and is intended to be cut, edged and assembled with no further decorating. It is also distinct from a laminate faced panel, where a separately manufactured decorative sheet is bonded to a board with adhesive.

Because the decoration is only skin deep, every cut exposes the raw core, and the panel is only as protected as its edge treatment. Melamine faced board is normally used as carcass and shelving material rather than as a door face where a heavier wearing surface may be wanted, and the core type, not the facing, decides how it behaves in a damp room.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.

Moisture behaviour
The facing sheds surface water but the core does not. Where a board is cut, drilled or left unedged, moisture reaches the core directly, and a board described as moisture resistant is still not a waterproof board.
Surface wear
The fused melamine layer is thin. It resists everyday wiping and light abrasion, but resistance to scratching and marking varies by product and is not something a reference page can state as absolute.
Repairability
A damaged facing cannot be sanded back and refinished the way a painted or veneered surface can. Repair usually means replacing the component or accepting a visible patch in the middle of a run.
Appearance
Decors are printed papers, so pattern repeat, sheen level and how well two batches match are practical questions that matter across a long run of cabinets in one room.
Installation dependency
Cutting quality decides the result. The brittle facing chips easily at the saw line, and the cut edge must be banded or otherwise sealed before the component goes into service.
Documentation
Emissions vary by formulation and by core, and the manufacturer's documentation for the specific board is the only reliable source for that and for any moisture-resistant core designation.

Most boards use a particleboard core, but fibreboard and moisture-modified cores are also offered, and the core rather than the facing governs fixing withdrawal and behaviour in damp air.

  • Does the room have ventilation adequate to clear cooking or bathing moisture, and who has confirmed that?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • What core has been supplied under the facing, and does the joinery drawing actually say so?
  • How are the carcass joints made, and does the chosen fixing suit a particleboard core?
  • Are shelves supported at centres that suit the panel, and has deflection been considered by the maker?
  • Is the back panel grooved in, pinned on or omitted, and does that affect the rigidity of the box?
  • Where units are wall hung, has the fixing method been designed by someone competent for the wall construction?

Appearance

  • Is the decor a plain colour, a printed woodgrain or a texture registered to the print beneath it?
  • Does the surface texture run in a direction that must be kept consistent across components?
  • How closely does the board decor match the edge banding that has been chosen to go with it?
  • Will the interior colour be visible when doors are open, and has that been considered against the door finish?
  • Are the boards from one production run, given that printed decors can shift between runs?

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.

  • How heavily will the shelves be loaded, and has the maker been asked what these components will carry?
  • Will the interiors be cleaned with anything stronger than a damp cloth?
  • Are edges in a position where trolleys, vacuum cleaners or feet will catch them?
  • What does the maker say about service life, given that it depends on traffic, exposure, installation quality and upkeep?
  • Will drawers and hinges be removed and refitted over time, and can the core take that?

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What cleaning products does the board manufacturer accept, and which will dull or mark the facing?
  • If a shelf is chipped, can a single component be replaced without dismantling the run?
  • Have spare panels or the decor reference been kept so a later replacement can be matched?
  • Who is responsible for re-sealing an edge if the banding lifts in service?
  • How will a swollen board be identified early, before the damage spreads through the run?

  • Melamine facing cannot be sanded, filled and refinished, so damage becomes a replacement question.
  • Holes drilled for hinges, shelf pins and services all break the facing and open the core.
  • A board sold as moisture resistant is a modified core, not a waterproof panel.
  • Printed decors can vary between production batches, which shows on a long continuous run.
