Overview
What edge banding is
Edge banding is a narrow strip applied to the cut edge of a board so that the exposed core is closed. It is supplied on rolls in plastics such as ABS and PVC, in real wood veneer, in melamine-impregnated paper and in acrylic, and it is chosen to suit the face of the panel it is going onto rather than picked as an afterthought at the end of a job.
It is an assembly component, not a decorative trim. A faced panel is only protected where its facing runs, every saw cut opens the core, and the banding is what closes it again. Unlike a solid timber lipping, which is a thicker applied section that adds a little stiffness and can be moulded or sanded back, banding is thin, adds nothing structurally and cannot be reworked once it is on.
The adhesive matters as much as the strip. Machine-applied hot-melt adhesives, reactive polyurethane adhesives, laser and hot-air zero-joint systems and the pre-glued tapes ironed on by hand all leave a different bond and a different glue line. Which one has been used decides how the edge behaves near heat, steam and repeated cleaning, and whether the joint line is visible at all.

- Installation dependency
- Application method sets the result. Machine-applied hot melt, reactive polyurethane and zero-joint systems each leave a different glue line, and a pre-glued tape ironed on by hand is bonded without the controlled heat and pressure a machine brings to it.
- Moisture behaviour
- A banded edge closes the core against splashes and wiping. It is not a seal, because water that finds the glue line or an unbanded back edge still reaches the core, and no banding makes a panel waterproof.
- Appearance
- The visible glue line, the colour match to the panel decor and whether the strip is matt or gloss all decide whether the edge disappears or reads as a stripe around every component.
- Surface wear
- Thin strips chip and peel at corners under impact. How the arris is eased, and where the edge sits relative to traffic, matter more than the material of the strip itself.
- Repairability
- A lifting strip can sometimes be re-bonded, but a section cannot be blended in the way a timber lipping can be filled and sanded, so repair usually means re-banding the whole edge.
- Documentation
- The banding material, the adhesive system and any heat or moisture limitation are product specific and belong in the maker's documentation for the furniture, not in a general description.
- Substrate dependency
- The panel edge must be clean, square and freshly machined for the bond to hold, so banding applied long after cutting or onto a rough edge starts at a disadvantage.

- Is the edge directly above a dishwasher, an oven or a kettle where steam is released?
- Will the edge be wiped with hot water or cleaning products every day?
- Does the room see large humidity swings that will work the joint over time?
- Is the banded edge at floor level where mopping water can reach it?
- Will the edge be in direct sunlight that may affect its colour over time?

- Is there a history of edges lifting in similar positions elsewhere in the same building?
- What does the furniture warranty say about edges specifically, rather than about faces?

- Who returns to re-band an edge that lifts, and within what period?
- Has a length of matching banding been retained for future repairs?
- Can a component be removed and re-edged, or would it have to be replaced?

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked points
- The back edges and cut-outs that nobody sees are often the ones left unsealed.
- Banding adds no stiffness at all, so a thin panel with a neat edge is still a thin panel.
- The adhesive, not the strip, is usually what fails near a steam source.
- The pre-glued tape ironed on by hand is bonded by eye and by hand pressure, which is a different process from machine banding rather than a smaller version of it.
- Colour matching a strip to a printed decor is rarely perfect and is best judged in the room's own light.
