Overview
What recycled glass surface is
Recycled glass composite is a slab material in which crushed or broken glass forms the visible aggregate, held in a binder and then ground and polished so the glass is cut through and reads as a mosaic of shards. The glass may come from container, plate or industrial sources, and the pieces are usually coarse enough to be seen individually across a whole worktop rather than reading as a texture.
It is easily confused with engineered-quartz-surface, which the library already covers, but the two differ on both counts that matter. Quartz surfacing uses fine quartz particles in a resin matrix at high loading, producing a dense uniform body. Here the aggregate is glass, and the matrix may be either a polymer resin or a cementitious binder. That second option has no equivalent in the quartz entry and changes the material's behaviour completely.
Resin-bound versions behave like other resin composites: dense, non-absorbent, and sensitive to heat and to some solvents. Cement-bound versions are porous, need a sealer, and patinate and etch as a cast concrete surface does. Which binder holds the slab is therefore the first question to ask, not a detail. The same aggregate-in-matrix family holds mineral-filled-solid-surface, agglomerated-marble-surface, cultured-marble-vanity-top and cast-epoxy-resin-worktop, each with its own aggregate and its own limit on repair.

Qualitative topics worth raising. Measured values, classes and grades come from the manufacturer's technical documentation for the specific product, not from a reference page.
- Substrate dependency
- The binder is the single most important fact about the slab. A resin matrix gives a dense non-absorbent body; a cementitious matrix gives a porous one that depends on a sealer. Establish which before any other question.
- Appearance
- Aggregate size, colour mix and how deeply the polish cuts into each shard set the whole character. Two slabs from the same range can look markedly different, so selection from the actual slabs is worth insisting on.
- Moisture behaviour
- Cement-bound slabs absorb water unless sealed and will darken where water stands. Resin-bound slabs do not absorb in the same way, but their joints, openings and junctions still need proper detailing.
- Maintenance
- A cement-bound surface brings a sealing regime, and the sealer's own documentation governs cleaning products and renewal. A resin-bound surface has no sealer but comes with its own list of products to avoid.
- Repairability
- Chips reveal the aggregate and are hard to disguise, because any filler has to imitate both binder and glass. Ask the fabricator what a repair looks like on this specific material before committing.
- Installation dependency
- Slabs are cut, polished and jointed by a fabricator working from a template, and glass aggregate is demanding on tooling. Joint positions are chosen to work with the figure as well as with the layout.
- Documentation
- Recycled content, binder type, heat guidance and permitted cleaners all come from the manufacturer. Any recycled-content figure should be treated as their claim to evidence rather than as an established property.
Exposure

- Which binder is in this slab, and has the supplier confirmed that in writing?
- How close will the surface come to a hob, an oven or another heat source?
- Will acidic spills be common, which matters a great deal for a cement-bound slab?
- Is there strong daylight on part of the run that may affect colour over time?

Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Slabs are supported by cabinetry and the fabricator sets bearing and overhang, as with any stone-type surface.
- Openings for sinks and hobs are cut and finished by the fabricator, and their position affects the figure.
- Joints between slabs are visible and cannot be hidden in a material with large aggregate.
- Cement-bound slabs may need a different fixing and sealing approach from resin-bound ones.
- Splashbacks cut from the same slab still meet the wall as a separate detail with its own sealing.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Large aggregate makes every joint and every cut edge a visible interruption in the pattern.
- Polished, honed and textured finishes reveal the glass to different depths and change the colour reading.
- The binder colour is as much of the design as the glass, and a pale binder makes the shards read sharply.
- Under-cabinet lighting picks up the cut glass faces and can make a run look very different at night.
- Slab selection matters more here than in most materials, because the figure is the whole design.

- Which parts of the run will take the hardest use, and are edges exposed to knocks there?
- How would a chipped edge be dealt with on a material where the aggregate is exposed by the damage?
- Is the household likely to use cleaning products the manufacturer excludes?
- How does the expected condition after several seasons compare with the other slabs being considered?

- Under-cabinet lighting dramatically changes how the aggregate reads, which is rarely tested before ordering.
- Sample tiles are often cut from the most figured part of a slab and are not a fair guide to the whole.
