Overview
What bamboo flooring is
Bamboo flooring is made from a giant grass rather than from a tree. Mature culms are cut, split into strips and processed with heat and adhesive into board material. Because the raw stock is a hollow tube rather than a log, the material has to be reconstituted before it can become a floor, and how that is done changes the finished product far more than the species does.
In the laminated route, flat strips are glued side by side or on edge into a board, giving the horizontal and vertical grain patterns that most people recognise as bamboo. In the strand-woven route, the fibres are shredded, saturated with resin and compressed into a dense block that is then milled into boards. Strand-woven material is markedly harder and shows almost none of the node pattern of laminated bamboo.
Both routes rely on adhesive as an integral part of the board, which is why the manufacturer's documentation carries more weight here than it does for a solid timber floor. Carbonised material, darkened by heating rather than by staining, is softer than the same product left untreated. Boards may be supplied solid through their thickness or as an engineered format with a bamboo wear layer over a separate core.
