Overview
What laminate flooring is
Laminate flooring is a pressed board built around a wood-based fibreboard core. A printed decorative paper carrying an image of timber, stone or another surface sits on top of the core, protected by a hard transparent layer of cured resin, with a balancing backing layer underneath. Nothing on the visible face is solid timber, and the pattern repeats across the floor at intervals set by how many printed designs the range uses.
The single most useful comparison is with luxury vinyl tile, and the two are constantly confused. Both carry a printed image beneath a clear wear surface. The difference is what that image is printed onto and carried by: laminate uses a fibreboard core made from wood fibre and resin, while vinyl products carry the print in a polymer body. Wood fibre swells when it takes up water and does not return to its original shape, so a laminate core that gets wet at the joints tends to lift permanently, whereas a polymer body responds to moisture quite differently.
Laminate boards are usually laid as a floating floor over an underlay, joined with machined click profiles rather than glue or nails, so the covering rests on the base instead of being attached to it. That makes the flatness of the base decisive, because every high spot works the joints each time the floor is walked on. The wear surface cannot be sanded or refinished, so repair means replacing boards rather than reworking the surface.

- A floating floor rests on the base rather than being fixed to it, so flatness and stability of the base translate directly into how quiet the floor feels and how well the joints hold together over time.
- Surface wear
- The resin wear surface resists scuffing well but cannot be repaired or sanded. Once it is worn or scratched through, the printed layer is exposed and the board has to be replaced.
- Appearance
- The image is printed, so the pattern repeats. How many decors a range carries, and how the boards are shuffled while laying, determines whether that repetition becomes noticeable across an open floor.
- Acoustic behaviour
- Floating boards over a hard base can sound hollow and transmit footfall, which is why the underlay specification does real work here rather than being a formality.
- Repairability
- Individual boards can sometimes be swapped out where the joint system allows it, but a click-jointed floating floor may need unpicking back from a wall, so spare boards from the original batch matter.
- Installation dependency
- Expansion gaps around the perimeter and at doorways are what let a floating floor move as a sheet. Trapping the floor under a fixed item or a tight skirting is a common cause of lifting.

- Existing timber decks need to be checked for movement and fixing before a floating floor goes over them.
