Hemp Fibre Insulation Batt and Roll

Explains what hemp fibre insulation is made from, why it is not the same thing as hemp lime infill, how it sits between the other natural fibres, and what to establish before it is chosen.

Overview

What hemp fibre insulation is

Hemp fibre insulation is made from the long bast fibres taken from the stem of the hemp plant. The fibres are cleaned, opened and formed into a mat, normally with a proportion of binder fibre to hold the batt together and mineral additives blended through it, and the mat is supplied as flexible batts and rolls rather than as a rigid board.

It is easily confused with hemp lime infill, which is a different material altogether: that uses the woody core of the same plant mixed with a lime binder and is cast or sprayed in place as a monolithic infill around a frame. A hemp batt is a cut and fitted insulation product, and the two are not alternatives to one another in any meaningful sense.

Among the natural fibres it sits between sheep wool and wood fibre. It is a plant fibre like wood fibre but supplied as a batt rather than a rigid board, and it is generally firmer and more structured than a wool quilt. Like the other plant and animal fibres it takes up and releases moisture rather than shedding it, and dense batts want a proper blade to cut cleanly.

  • Laid between the ceiling joists of an accessible loft, where each bay is cut to the width measured rather than teased out to fill what is left.

  • In upright framed bays that are lined over soon after the batts go in, so the material is enclosed and left undisturbed for the rest of the build.
  • Where the designer has chosen a fibre that takes up and gives off moisture rather than shedding it, and has assessed the whole construction on that footing.
  • Where the brief has settled on a plant stem fibre and the reasons behind that choice are written into the design rather than left as an assumption.
  • Where a flexible batt rather than a rigid board is what the position calls for, a distinction worth drawing early against the wood fibre products.
  • Where a firmer batt than a wool quilt suits how the material has to be held in place in this construction.

These are the situations where the answer depends on the specific building, and where a qualified professional should be involved before anything is decided.

  • Anywhere the layer would be walked on or built over, since a flexible fibre batt is not a load bearing component and the question belongs to an engineer.
  • In a position where damp or a leak has not been traced, because a plant fibre takes water up rather than shedding it and the cause has to be dealt with first.
  • Where the depth is tight and the alternative under discussion is a rigid board, a comparison that turns on the whole build-up rather than on the fibre alone.

Moisture behaviour
A stem fibre takes water up and gives it off again rather than shedding it, which is not how the foam boards behave. That is why the construction has to be looked at in the round, by a qualified professional working from what is actually being built rather than from the material on its own.
Thermal behaviour
Whatever the layer does depends on the exact product, on the bay being filled right out to the timber, and on the batt not having been forced in. Figures for any of that sit in the manufacturer documentation and in a calculation done for the construction as built.
Acoustic behaviour
Fibrous material in a partition comes up wherever sound between rooms is a concern, but a firmer batt does not turn that into a property of the material. What a partition or a floor achieves comes out of the whole assembly, its junctions and the workmanship, and is settled by test evidence rather than by a description.
Fire-related questions
No fire characteristic is described or compared here, including any comparison with other natural fibres. Fire behaviour depends on the product and the assembly and is a matter for the manufacturer's documentation, a qualified professional and the relevant authority.
Installation dependency
Dense plant fibre batts do not tear neatly and want a suitable blade or saw to cut cleanly, which is a practical difference from cutting a light mineral quilt with a knife. Cutting also produces dust that travels in an occupied property.

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.

  • The bay widths as actually built, which decide how much of the batt has to be cut and how much of it simply drops in.
  • Whether the framing gives the batts anything to sit against on the far face of the bay, or whether that has to be added as part of the work.
  • Whether the control layer strategy for this build-up has been settled already, since a fibre batt fits into that decision rather than making it.
  • How the bays close at the eaves and at the wall plate, where the space narrows and a batt that will not fold has to be cut to suit.
  • What else is already occupying the bay, since a firm batt cannot be teased around cables, pipes and fitting housings the way a soft quilt can.

Appearance and finish considerations

  • The batts carry the flecked, natural colour of the plant fibre, which is visible only while the bays are open and decides nothing about the finished room.
  • A batt that has been forced into a bay bows out of the face, and that bow is a sign of a cut made too generous rather than a trimming job.
  • In a riser or a cupboard where a face stays open, a dense mat holds its edge better than a quilt, though it is still not a surface meant to be knocked or brushed.
  • Cut edges of a dense batt are cleaner with the right blade, which shows in how neatly the layer sits at junctions.

Durability

Durability questions

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.

  • Whether a firm batt cut a shade small will work loose in the bay over time, and what is meant to stop it moving once the lining is on.
  • Whether cut edges left ragged by the wrong blade will open into gaps as the batts settle against the timber.
  • What a slow leak would do to a plant fibre mat, and how long it might sit wet behind a lining before anything showed on the surface.
  • Whether a batt crushed by something stored on it, or knelt on during other work, springs back or stays as it was left.
  • What the manufacturer will say about the binder fibre and the mineral additives over time, in a position that gets hot in summer and cold in winter.

Upkeep

Maintenance and repair considerations

  • What would have to be taken off the face of the construction to see these batts again, and what that means for the room in front of it.
  • Whether a batt cut through for a cable is repaired with a fitted piece or simply pushed back, which is a difference nobody sees later.
  • How a plant fibre mat that has been wet would be judged, and whether drying it in place is even on the table, which is a professional's call.
  • Whether the same blend of fibre, binder and additive would still be available if part of the layer had to be renewed.

What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.

  • Where the packs are kept before they go in, because plant fibre standing on an open site does not reach the bay in the state it left the factory.
  • A suitable blade or saw for cutting dense batts, rather than the knife used for a light mineral quilt.
  • The offcuts a firm batt leaves behind, which have to go somewhere on a site where a soft quilt would simply have been folded into the next bay.
  • A positive means of holding the batts where the bay is not upright, decided before the material arrives rather than improvised on the day.
  • Making the layer continuous around hatches, openings and any interruption, where offcuts rather than full batts are doing the work.

Blind spots

Commonly overlooked points

  • Hemp fibre batts and hemp lime infill share a plant and nothing else, and the two are regularly conflated.
  • A hemp batt is a blend: bast fibre, something to bind it and usually mineral additives, which is not what the name on the pack suggests.
  • Dense batts need a proper blade, and cutting them with the wrong tool leaves ragged edges and gaps at junctions.
  • Plant fibre that has been rained on before fitting does not simply dry out once it is closed in behind a lining.
  • The pieces that fill awkward corners are cut last, fitted quickly and covered soonest, which is why the layer thins out at the edges.
