What timber wall panelling is
Timber wall panelling covers a wide family: traditional framed panels with stiles and rails, tongue-and-groove boarding, applied mouldings that create the look of panels on a flat wall, sheet-based board and batten, and contemporary slatted or fluted panels. What they share is that wood is fixed to the wall face rather than applied wet.
The material may be solid timber, veneered or painted board, or a wood-based sheet, and that choice affects behaviour more than appearance suggests. Solid timber moves with changes in humidity, mostly across the grain. Board products move differently, and paint-grade sheets are often chosen precisely because they are more dimensionally settled.
Fixing is the other half of the subject. Panelling is normally carried on battens or a grounds framework that provides a flat plane and something to fix into, which means the wall behind must be sound and the void behind it considered. Skirtings, architraves, sockets and switches all have to be resolved where the new surface changes the plane of the wall.

- Substrate dependency
- The battens or grounds create the plane the panelling sits on, so the flatness of the finished wall is decided by the framework behind rather than by the panels themselves.
- Appearance
- Panel proportion, rail heights and how the design meets doors, windows and corners determine whether panelling looks designed or merely applied. This is drawn out before anything is cut.
- Repairability
- Individual panels or boards can often be replaced, which is a genuine advantage over continuous finishes, though matching an aged painted or stained surface is the harder half of the job.
- Surface wear
- Panelling is frequently used where walls get knocked, and it takes that better than plaster does. Painted finishes on it still chip at arrises and need touching in from time to time.
- Installation dependency
- Fixing method, batten layout and the treatment of the void behind all need deciding early, along with where sockets, switches and skirtings will finish against the new surface.
- Documentation
- Timber species, board type and finish should be recorded, since future repairs and additions depend on being able to match what is already on the wall.
