Overview
What wood stain is
A wood stain or dye is a colouring medium carried in water, spirit or oil that soaks into the timber surface and alters its tone. Pigmented stains lodge particles in the grain and open pores, which tends to emphasise figure and can look muddy on close-grained species. Dyes dissolve fully and colour the fibre itself, giving a clearer result that is generally less lightfast.
The crucial difference from paint, varnish or lacquer is that a stain is not a finish. It builds no film of consequence, offers no wear surface and does not protect the timber. Paint covers the wood and hides it, while a stain changes the wood and leaves it exposed. Almost every stained surface therefore needs a separate sealing or coating layer over the colour before it goes into service.
Because the colour is delivered by absorption, the result depends on the timber as much as on the product. Density, grain direction, end grain, sapwood and heartwood, resin content and the degree of preparation all change how much colour is taken up. That is why the same product gives different results on different boards, and why sample pieces from the actual batch matter.

- Substrate dependency
- Uptake is governed by the timber. Species, density, grain direction, resin content and the state of preparation all change the depth of colour, so one product can look like two different products on two boards.
- Appearance
- Pigmented stains settle into open grain and accentuate figure, while dyes colour the fibre more evenly. The wet look during application is not the finished look, and the coating that follows shifts the tone again.
- Surface wear
- A stain provides no wear layer at all. Everything that resists traffic, cleaning and handling comes from the finish applied over it rather than from the colour itself.
- Repairability
- Local repair is difficult because the colour sits inside the timber. Blending a patch usually means working across the surrounding area rather than treating the damaged spot alone.
- Maintenance
- Once a stained surface is coated, upkeep belongs to the coating. Recolouring normally means taking the finish back to bare timber, which is a far larger operation than recoating.
- Moisture behaviour
- Moisture content and previous wetting change absorption, and a damp board takes colour differently from a dry one. That is a question about the timber's condition rather than about the stain.
- Documentation
- Ask the manufacturer which finishes may be applied over the specific stain, since spirit, water and oil carriers do not all accept the same overcoats and the mismatch shows only after the work is done.

- Will the surface receive strong daylight, and what does the manufacturer say about the lightfastness of this colour?
- Is the timber going outside, and is the stain part of a system with a separate protective coating?
- What is the moisture condition of the timber at the time of colouring, and is it stable?
- Will the finished surface be handled, walked on or cleaned frequently, and does the chosen topcoat suit that?
- Does the room's artificial lighting change how the chosen tone reads against adjacent materials?
Assembly
Substrate and system dependencies
What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- Species and even individual boards vary, and matching across a mixed batch may simply not be achievable.
- End grain absorbs far more colour than face grain, so joinery ends and board ends read darker.
- Any residual glue, filler or previous finish blocks absorption and shows as a pale patch afterwards.
- Engineered boards carry a thin wear layer, and the preparation they can take is limited by that layer.
- The finish chosen to go over the stain must be compatible with its carrier, which is a product-level question.
Appearance
Appearance and finish considerations
- Colour is judged on the actual timber, under the actual light, with the intended topcoat applied over the sample.
- Pigment tends to make grain more pronounced, while dye tends to make colour more even across the face.
- The tone will normally deepen once a clear finish is applied over the colour.
- Sapwood and heartwood within the same board rarely take colour identically.
- Older timber that has already darkened will not return to a sample colour by staining alone.

Questions to raise rather than a service life to expect. No material has a universal lifespan — it depends on the assembly, the exposure and the upkeep.
- How does this colour behave under ultraviolet exposure over time, and does the manufacturer address fading?
- Is the protection coming entirely from the finish above, and has that finish been chosen for the service?
- What happens in areas of heavy wear where the coating thins and the coloured layer is exposed?
- Does the timber itself continue to darken or lighten independently of the stain?
- How will the surface look if it is repaired in a few places rather than refinished as a whole?
Upkeep
Maintenance and repair considerations
- If the topcoat is renewed, does the colour underneath survive the preparation that renewal requires?
- Can a damaged area be recoloured invisibly, or is a much wider area involved?
- What record exists of the exact product and tone used, for the purposes of touching in later?
- Does routine cleaning of the finished surface affect the colour at all, or only the coating above it?
- If the timber is ever taken back to bare wood, how much of the colour comes out with it?
Installation
Installation dependencies
What the installation depends on — not how to do it. Method belongs to the manufacturer's instructions and the trades carrying out the work.
- Preparation of the bare timber decides the evenness of the result more than any other single factor.
- Fillers, glues and pencil marks left on the surface become permanent features of the colour.
- Sample panels from the same batch are the only reliable way to agree a colour before work starts.
- The sequence matters, since colouring happens before the protective coating and cannot be revisited afterwards.
- Timber moisture and site conditions at the time of work sit outside the decorator's control and belong to the programme.

Ask for these in writing, for the specific product being proposed, and keep them with the project record.
- Ask for the product data sheet including the carrier used and the overcoats stated as compatible.
- Ask what the manufacturer says about lightfastness for the specific colour rather than for the range.
- Request a record of the product name, tone and batch for the maintenance file.
- Ask the joinery supplier what, if anything, has already been applied to the timber.
- Obtain the safety data sheet for spirit-based products, which behave differently from water-based ones.

Blind spots
Commonly overlooked points
- Colouring and protecting are two separate decisions, and only one of them is made when a stain is chosen.
- The sample has to be topcoated, because the clear finish shifts the tone away from the bare result.
- Glue squeeze-out at joints is invisible on bare timber and obvious once the stain goes on.
- Stain cannot lighten timber, it can only add colour to whatever is already there.
- Changing a stained colour later is a stripping job rather than a repainting job.
