What mosaic tile is
Mosaic is a format rather than a material. The individual pieces, or tesserae, may be porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, glass or metal faced, and they are supplied pre-arranged on a sheet so that a whole area can be laid at once instead of piece by piece.
The mounting method matters more than most people expect. Sheets may be mesh backed, dot mounted, or face mounted with paper that is removed after fixing. Backings behave differently with different bedding materials, some can be seen through translucent glass pieces, and the choice affects both the finished look and the installation itself.
The defining characteristic of mosaic is the quantity of joints. A mosaic area contains many times the length of joint that the same area in large tiles would have, so grout becomes the dominant material both visually and in maintenance. Where sheets meet, the joint between them has to match the joints within them, or a grid pattern appears across the finished surface.

- Maintenance
- Grout is the dominant maintained material in mosaic work. Whatever the tesserae are made of, it is the joints that discolour, and the total length of joint in a given area is far greater than in ordinary tiling.
- Installation dependency
- Sheet alignment is the whole craft. Keeping the joint between sheets identical to the joints within them, and keeping every sheet level and square, is what separates good mosaic work from an obvious grid.
- Substrate dependency
- Small units cannot bridge an uneven base. Every hollow and high spot in the background telegraphs through to the finished face, so preparation matters more here than with larger tiles.
- Appearance
- Because grout occupies so much of the visible surface, joint colour changes the finished appearance more than the colour of the tesserae does in a great many mosaics.
- Moisture behaviour
- Mosaic is often used in wetted areas, but the management of water behind it is a separate designed layer. The mounting backing and the bedding also have to suit each other where moisture is present.
- Repairability
- Damaged tesserae can be picked out and replaced individually, which is easier than replacing a large tile, though matching an aged joint line is usually the harder part of the job.
- Surface wear
- On floors the many joints take the wear as much as the pieces do, so the behaviour of the joint material under traffic becomes a practical topic in its own right.
Exposure

- Will this surface be continuously wetted, or only splashed from time to time?
- How often will the area be cleaned, and who is going to be doing it?
- Is the area in strong light that would reveal any misalignment between sheets?
- Will the surface see foot traffic as well as water in normal use?

What this material sits on, is fixed to or depends on. This is usually where performance is won or lost.
- The background must be flat, because small units reveal every deviation in it.
- Where the surface is curved, the background has to be formed accurately before tiling.
- The mounting backing has to be compatible with the bedding material being used.
- In wetted areas, the layer that manages water sits behind the mosaic and is designed separately.
- Falls in a shower floor are formed in the base beneath, not made up in the bedding.
- Where mosaic meets larger tiling, the two setting-out grids have to be reconciled deliberately.

- Joint colour dominates the finished result, often more than the colour of the pieces themselves.
- Sheet joints show as a grid across the wall if the setting out is not carefully controlled.

- Can individual pieces be replaced later, and are spare sheets available?
- How will the sealant lines at junctions be maintained over the years?

- Setting out the sheet positions before fixing determines whether a grid becomes visible.
- Face-mounted paper has to be removed at the right moment, which affects the sequence.
- Cutting sheets and individual pieces neatly at the edges is slow and skilled work.
- Grouting a mosaic uses far more material and takes far longer than plain tiling.
- Trim and edge details need deciding before the first sheet is fixed to the wall.
