Tile Backer Board (Tiling Substrate Board)

Explains what backer boards do within a tiled assembly and, just as importantly, what they do not do, since being moisture tolerant is not the same as forming the layer that keeps water out.

Overview

What tile backer board is

Tile backer board is a substrate. It is fixed to a wall or a floor to give tiling a flat, stable and moisture-tolerant base, in place of materials such as ordinary plasterboard or a bare timber deck that would not cope with the conditions or provide the rigidity a tiled surface needs.

Several constructions exist. Cement-based boards use a cementitious core with reinforcing mesh or fibres. Foam-cored boards use an extruded polystyrene core faced with a cement-polymer coating and mesh, which makes them light and easy to cut. Fibre-reinforced and gypsum-based tiling boards sit between the two. They differ in weight, in how they are cut, in what fixings they need, and in how they behave when wet.

The critical point is what a backer board is not. Moisture tolerance means the board itself is not damaged by water, which is a different thing from the assembly keeping water out. Some boards are described by their makers as part of a water-managing system when used with that maker's own jointing components and details, and that is a matter for the manufacturer's documentation and a qualified professional rather than an assumption.

Moisture behaviour
Moisture tolerance and water management are two different things. A board unaffected by water still relies on jointing, taping and detailing, and often on a separate applied layer, for the assembly as a whole to control water.
Substrate dependency
The board provides the flat, stable plane that rigid tiling needs, but it cannot fix a deck that deflects underfoot. The structure beneath has to be assessed before any boarding is considered.
Installation dependency
Fixing type, fixing pattern, board orientation and joint treatment are all set out by the board maker, and the assembly depends on following that guidance rather than on general site practice.
Repairability
Once tiled over, the board is inaccessible. Any service, fixing or detail that needs to pass through it has to be resolved before the tiling starts rather than afterwards.
Thermal behaviour
Foam-cored boards have some insulating character, which changes how a tiled surface feels underfoot, but a reference page cannot put a value on that and the maker's data is what governs.
Acoustic behaviour
Adding a rigid board layer changes how a wall or floor transmits sound, and any acoustic requirement is a design matter assessed on the whole build-up rather than on one component.
Documentation
Boards vary so much between makers that only the specific product's own instructions describe what it can do, including any claim about the part it plays in managing water.

  • Deflection in a timber floor must be assessed before a board overlay is even considered.
  • Stud spacing and the framing behind a boarded wall govern board selection and fixing pattern.
  • Joints between boards need whatever treatment the maker specifies before tiling begins.
  • Fixings for heavy items should reach the structure behind the board, which needs planning early.

  • The board is concealed, so it contributes to appearance only through the flatness of the plane it creates.
  • Steps between adjacent boards show through as lippage in the finished tiling above.
